To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR C. RIXSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Rochelle, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door Holders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to door holders which are utilized to hold doors either in closed, partially opened or fully opened position, the invention being particularly applicable for use with a pair of swinging doors, such as are used on garages and in other places where it is desirable that the doors be moved and held in a position in which unobstructed entrance to the building is permitted.
One object of the invention, therefore, is to provide a door holder which will permit the door to swing through an angle substantially greater than a right angle so that the door can be swung back almost against the building which, for example, will permit a car to be driven into the garage at an angle as well as from directly in front of the same.
Another object of the invention is to provide a door holder which will rigidly lock the door in its closed position, in its fully opened position, or in an intermediate position.
Another object of the invention is to provide a door holder in which the connections with the door and its frame are not disturbed but a construction is provided which will automatically lock itself, and yet can be released when desired, in an entirely simple manner.
A further object of the invention is to provide a door holder which may be utilized in place of the lock bolt at the top of the door or not, as desired.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of a door holder which comprises a plurality of rigid links which are pivotally connected to the door and its frame, respectively, together with a locking member with which one of the links may be bodily moved. into. and out of locking engagement.
More specifically stated, the invention consists of providing two or more rigid links which are pivotally connected to the door and frame, respectively, and a locking memher which is arranged above one of the links at its pivotal point, the links being bodily movable into and out of engagement with looking slots in the locking member. A spring or like device is provided for urging the link into locking engagement with the member and a cord or chain, or their equivalents, is connected to the link so that the link may be moved out of engagement from a polnt.
The invention will also be understood from the illustrated embodiment thereof, which will be explained in detail in the following description and in the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings Figure 1 shows in elevation a door equipped with a door holder constructed in accordance with the principles of the invention; Fig. 2 shows a horizontal section through the door and its frame, the door holder being shown in plan; Fig. 3 shows a detail of the locking mem her and swinging arm associated therewith, the swinging arm being out of locking engagement with the member; Fig. 4 shows a similar construction in which the swinging arm is held out of locking engagement with the locking member when the door is in its closed position; and Fig. 5 is a detail of the locking member.
The door holder is adapted to be used with any type of swinging door, such a door being partially shown and designated 1, which door is mounted in the usual frame 2 upon hinges 3. The door holder illustrated comprises two pivoted rigid links or arms 4 and 5, the link 4 being formed of two separate bars, each of which is offset at one end to provide a space for the other link 5 which fits between the same, the parts being secured together by a pivot pin 6, in the usual manner. The link 4 is pivotally connected at its other end to the frame of the door by means of a depending post 8 which is supported upon a plate 9 secured to the underface of the top piece of the frame, the link being pivotally secured to the post by a pin 10 which passes through a centrally disposed aperture in the post and has its head fitting in a recess in the face of the plate. The other end of the link 5. is rigidly secured to a stud or pivot pin 11 which is pivotally mounted in a semicircular hub or boss 12 carried by a plate 13 which is fastened to the face of the door. This hub or boss is recessedto provide a chamber 1-1 surrounding the intermediate part of the pin, the ends of the pin having a suitable bearing in the hub, as at 1515. Surrounding the pin and mounted within the chamber 14 is a spring 16, one end of which bears against the bottom of the chamber and the other against a washer 16 which is held in position by a pin passing through the pin 11, whereby the tension of the spring is exerted to force the pivot pin and the link 5 upwardly. The plate 13 also carries a semi-circular plate which surrounds the hub. The plate is provided with a downwardly turned flange which has a plurality of locking slots or recesses, into any of which the arm or link 5 is adapted to fit and hence be rigidly locked against angular movement. The link 5 is automatically moved into one of these slots, depending upon the angular position of the arm, by the upward tension upon the arm exerted through the spring and pivot. In the form shown, five such slots are formed which are arranged so that when the door is in its closed position, the arm will fit into the middle slot 17 and when the door is moved to a partially opened position, such as is shown in Fig. 2 where the door has been swung through an angle substantially 95, the arm will fit into slot designated 18, and when the door is still further opened so that it has been swung through an angle of substantially 135, the arm will fit into slot 19. In this manner, the door may be locked in its closed or in an intermediate, or in a fully opened position. The slots desi ated 20 and 20 have no function when the slots 18 and 19 are used, but those are provided so that the construction of the door holder will permit it to be used on a right or left handed swinging door. It is obvious that the number and arrangement of the locking slots may be varied from that shown in the drawing depending upon the different requirements to which the door holder may be placed. Secured to the link 5 is a depending cord or chain 21, which may be grasped to pull the swinging arm out of engagement with any of the locking slots.
With some doors it is not desirable to use a door holder which will lock the door from the inside when it is in closed position. To take care of this contingency a block 22 of suitable size to fill the central locking slot 17 is provided. This block is secured in the slot by means of a screw or bolt 23 so that it is removable, permitting the same door holder to be used to lock the door in its closed position, if desired. It may here be stated that where the holder is used to lock the door in its closed position, it will take the place of the upper lock bolt carried by the door.
I claim:
1. A holder for swingin closures comprising a plurality of pivoted links secured at their free ends to the swinging closure and its frame respectively, a'lock for preventing pivotal movement of said links comprising a part carried by one of said links and a part cooperating therewith, one of said parts being bodily movable out of locking engagement with the other, means for forcing said parts into locking engagement, and a depending connection from said movable part for manually moving it out of looking ongagement with the other of said parts.
2. A holder comprising a plurality of pivoted links secured to a swinging closure and its frame respectively, a locking member associated with one of said links, means normally urging said link into locking engagement with said member, and a'connection depending from said link for bodily moving it out of locking engagement with said member.
8. A holder comprising a plurality of pivoted links secured to a swinging closure and its frame respectively, one of said links being bodily movable on its pivoted axis, a locking sector having a locking slot therein, means forurging said link into said slot, and a depending connection for bodily moving said link out of said slot.
4-. A holder comprising a swinging arm, a locking member positioned above said arm, said arm being bodily movable into and out of locking engagement therewith, and a depending connection from said arm for bodily moving said arm into and out of locking engagement with said member.
5. A holder comprising a swinging arm, a pivot pin rigidly secured to said arm, a bearing in which said pin is slidably and rotatably mounted, a locking member arranged above said arm, and a depending connection from said arm for bodily moving said arm and pivot into and out of locking engagement with said member.
6. A holder comprising a swinging arm, a pivot pin rigidly secured to said arm, a bearing in which said pin is slidably and rotatably mounted, a locking sector above said arm concentric with the pivot pin, said sector having a locking slot therein, a spring surrounding said pivot pin exerting its tension to urge said arm into said slot, and a depending connection from said arm for moving the arm out of said slot.
