T. P. MONAIR.
Plow.

. ATTORNEYS N. PETERS, PHOTO-Llmocnavus UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMASF. MONAIR, OF WORTHVILLE, GEORGIA.
lM PROVE M-ENT IN PLOWS.
Specification ibrming part of Letters Patent No. 209,282, dated October 22, 1878 application filed August 15, 1878.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THos. F. MONAIR, of Worthville, in the county of Butts, and in the State of Georgia, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Plows and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the several parts of a plow, whereby the standard, the blade, the brace to the standard, a root-cutter, and the handles may all be adjusted, as will be hereinafter more particularly described.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my in vention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a perspective, and Fig. 2 a partial longitudinal section.
In the figures, A represents the beam, and B the handles, which, in their general features, are
constructed in the ordinary manner. The rear portion of the beam is either provided with a curved slot or with a series of holes, a; as, through which a bolt passes, with a thumbscrew, 0, upon one end, for the purpose of assisting in securing the handles in place, and at the same time regulating the adjustment of the same.
The handles turn upon a bolt at their lower ends, which also passes through the beam. By means of the upper bolt the handles may be adjusted to suit the height of the operator.
0 represents the standard, which is composed of a single bar of metal, which is bent atit s center, so that its sides are parallel a portion of their way, the upper ends being bent, so thatthey fit snugly against the beam A, where they are suitably bolted.
D represents a brace, which is either hinged or bolted to the under side of the rear end of is connected to the standard by means of one or more bolts, a a.
F represents a knife, which acts as a rootcutter. The lower end of this knife is bolted to the plow-blade and standard, while its back lies in between the two sides of said standard, being held in place by'means of a pin, When the knife is not in use, a clamp, through which one of the screws a passes, holds the upper end of the plow-blade in position.
It will be seen that by the several adjustments and the construction of the parts as herein described the plow-blade can easily be changed and another substituted, or that the angle of the standard and its brace may be changed, or that the height of the handles can be regulated with ease and dispatch.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the double metallic standard (J, pivoted to each side of the plowbeam, the shovel E, the cutter F, having pin 2', and the adjustable slotted brace D, the shovel, the cutter, and the brace being connected to the standard by the same bolts, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 9th day of March, 1878.
