1. R. GILBERT.
PLOW STANDARD. No. 246,496. Patent d Aug. 30,1881.
UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
IsAAo R. eILBERu'oF cHAItLEsTowN, INDIANA.
PLOW-STANDARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 246,496, dated August 30, 1881.
Application led April 19, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, IsAAc R. GILBERT, ot' Charlestown, in the county of Clark and State ot' Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plow-Standards; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The nat-ure ofthis invention relates to a plow in which the standard is adapted to be provided with either a shovel-blade, a cottonscraper blade, a cotton-sweep blade, a bulltongue blade, ora turning-plow bottom. These devices are detachably secured to the standard, and from their construction and the object for which they are employed require the standard to be set at dieren't angles with respect to the plow-beam in order to vary the pitch ofthe attached blade.
The object of my improvement therefore is to provide means for readily adjusting the standard to the angle requisite to give the proper pitch to the blade which it carries. To attain this object I pivot the upper end ofthe standard to the plow-beam, and to a sliding block adjust-ably connected with the beam l pivot an inclined bra-ce thatis hinged to the standard, as hereinafterdescri bed and claimed.
ln the annexed drawings, Figure l isa bottom perspective view ot' my invention, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken on a Vertical plane through the same.
A indicates the plow-beam; and B the slotted standard, which is adapted to receive various kinds of plow-blades, said blades being bolted to the standard as usual. The standard is hinged to the beam so thatit can be swung backward or forward as occasion may require.
l) indicates the inclined brace that is arranged at the rear ofthe standard. This brace is hinged or pivoted in the slotted standard, and is also hinged to a sliding block or plate,
E, by means ot' a pivot, e, passing through lugs e e', that are formed upon said plate or block. This plate or block can be moved backward or forward along the under side ot' the beam in order to vary the angle of' the standard, and hence determine the pitch ofthe blade carried thereby. To hold this sliding plate to the beam, and also to secure it in its adjustment, I form it with a slot,f, through which a bolt passes, said bolt also passing th rough the beam and being secured thereto. Upon the lower screw-threaded end ot' this bolt is arranged a nut, I, which not only serves to hold the sliding plate in contact with the beam, but which, when tightened up against the slotted plate or block, secures the same in place.
It is obvious that a metal plate could be secured to the beam and a setscrew passed through the slot of the sliding plate into the plate that is held rigid with the beam.
I am well aware that various means have been used for adjusting' plow-standards to dit'- ferent angles, and among them an angular brace, one end ot' which is pivoted to the standard andthe other provided with a slotted plate, by means ot' which it is bolted to the beam. Such an arrangement fails to eii'eot pertect results, as I nd it absolutely necessary to pivot or hinge the brace not only to the standard,
but also to a sliding block, in order to admit of the`block sliding on a line parallel with the under side of the beam, and thus enabling the brace to be easily set at any desired angle and quickly secured in any given position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The combination, with a plow-beam and a sliding block formed with a slot and lugs, as described, ot' a slotted standard and an inclined brace, said brace being' pivoted to the standard and block, all constructed and arranged to operate as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I at'x my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MITCHEL P. ALPHA, SoLoN YOUNG.
