Description
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
GILLUM SHELTON, or NORMAL, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT lN- CLEVISES.
I Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,976, dated December 22, 1874; application filed August 10, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GILLUM SHELTON, of Normal, county of McLean and State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in Plow-Clevises, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to improvements in clevises for regulating the lateral and vertical penetration of plows; and the invention consists in constructing the stationary clevis with a socket, fitting the forward end of the beam for protection thereof, and carrying on its forward end a double segmental adjusting-plate, and 011 its rear end plates for receiving the pivot-bolt for the oscillating clevis, with which it operates in combination, all as hereinafter fully described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view, Fig. 2 a top view, and Fig. 3 a side elevation, of my invention. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the plane of the line :10 m in Fig. 2.
The similar letters used as marks of reference refer to the like parts in all the figures.
Letter A represents one end of a plow-beam in dotted lines. B is the stationary clevis, formed, as shown in the drawings, of a socket, B, which fits snugly the end of the beam, and carries across its forward end an' arcshaped plate, b, from the upper and lower sides of which segmental flanges b b extend forward, and are pierced with holes b. B B are plates extending back from the upper and lower sides of the socket B, and perforated at their rear ends for the passage of the bolt 0. D is the oscillating clevis, formed, as
also shown in the drawings, of a vertical adjusting-bar, D, which is pierced with holes d, and provided with two rearwardlyextending arms, D D, perforated at their forward ends for the passage of a bolt, E, and at their rear ends for the passage of the bolt 0. The socket B, arcs b b b and plates B B are cast in one piece, and are retained in place on the plow'beam by screw-nails or small bolts through the holes 11.. The clevis D oscillates on the bolt 0, and is fixed in any desired position by the bolt E, for adjusting the lateral penetration of the soil by the plows, and. when adjusted to the extreme right or left hand the socket B will strengthen the end of the beam to resist the increased strain thereon, and the plates B will furnish metallic bearings for the bolt 0. The entire socket may be extended back as far as the plates B, but the construction shown is lighter, and furnishes all needed stay to the end of the beam.
The vertical penetration of the soil by the plows is regulated by attaching the draft-animals higher or lower in the series of holes (I in the bar D, in the obvious manner.
'What I claim as my invention is- The herein described attachment to the beams of plows, consisting of the combination of the socket B, segmental plates b, and bolt 0 with the oscillating clevis D and bolt E, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
GILLUM SHELTON.
