' J. G. JORDAN.
GULTIVYATORQ Patented July 4,1882.

- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSIAH G. JORDAN, OF THOMASVILLE, GEORGIA.
c u LTIVATO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part ofLetters Patent No. 260,576, dated July 4, 1882.
Application filed April 21, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSIAH G. JORDAN, of Thomasville, in the county of Thomas and State of Georgia, have. invented a new and useful Improvement in Cultivators and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part 'of this specification, in which'- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved cultivator. Fig. 2.is a front view of a portion of the beam and handles, partly in section; and Fig. 3 is an under side view of the front end of the beam, with clevis, hook, and chain attached thereto.
My invention relates to improvements in cultivators; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the drawings, A represents the plowbeam, which, with the exception of certain peculiarities hereinafter described, may be of the usual well-known construction.
BB represent the plow-handles, the front ends of which are pivoted to the beam A in any suitable manner.
0 represents the cross-bar, consisting, first, of the main portion 0, having the central curved portion, 0, and the bent end plates, 0 0", having threaded openings adapted to take the set-screws 0 as shown, and, second, of the auxiliary straight portion 0 with pointed ends, which is rigidly secured at its center to the central portion, 0, of the main portion 0, as shown.
D D represent the beam-rods, the lower ends of which are secured to the curved portion of the beam A in any proper manner, and the upper ends of which, being provided with .eyes d d, are secured by the pointed ends of the auxiliary portion of the cross-bar, as shown. By means of this construction 'itis possible to adjust thehaudles nearer to or farther from each other, as may be desired, and the effect of the lateral adjustment will be to raise or lower the handles ina vertical plane, the upperends of the beam-rods describing an arc of a circle upon the lower ends as-a pivot.
- E represents the clevis, attached to the beam A at its front end in such manner as to swing on the lower side of the same, as shown.
or, represents a groove in the lower side of the inclined end of the plow-beam, as shown. By means of this construction the ring or hook which is caught into the clevis is steadily held under draft, its upper portion lying in the groove of the plow-beams, as shown.
F represents -one of a pair of sheetiron plates, semi-oval in form, which plates are riveted tothe plow-beam at the bend, as shown. The front edges of thesoplates are brought together and sharpened forthe purpose of obtaining a cutting-edge. By means of this construction the beam is greatly strengthened at its weakest point, and. it is provided with a blade for cutting the grass.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s 1 1. The combination, with the plow-handles B B, of the cross-bar 0, having the main portion 0, the central curved part, c, auxiliary 7 part c", and bent end parts, 0 0 having threaded holes and set-screws cfisubstantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the plow-handles B B, of the cross-bar G, having the main portion 0, the central curved part, c, and bent end parts, 0 0 having threaded openings to take the set-screws 0 c and the beam-rods D D, all combined and arranged as and for the purpose described.
3. In combination with the plow-beam having the inclined end and groove a, the clevis E, and hook or ring employed therewith, substantially as described.
JOSIAH G. J ORDAN.
