Description

2Sheets--Sheet2. D. B. EBEBLY.
Cultivators. N0. 145,636. Patented Dec.l6,1873.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID B. EBERLY, OF FINE VILLAGE, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CULTIVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,636, dated December 16, 1873; application filed May 31, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID B. EBERLY, of Pine Village, in the county of Warren and State of Indiana, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Cultivators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of my improved harrow and corn-cultivator. by
a plan view. Fig. 2 is a central section of the same. Fig. 3 is an elevation, and Fig. 4a plan view, of a plow-beam and shovel used in comblade, as hereinafter described.
In the drawings, A represents a wheel, two of which are requisite to support my machine on a metallic axle, B, which is composed of a number of slotted pieces, I). The pieces I), at the right and left ends, are united with the axle bearin gs of the wheels A, and the several pieces are very firmly fastened and clamped together by bolts, and with the aid of the adjustable fulcrums G, to which the plow-beams D are pivoted. The plow or cultivator shanks E are pivoted to the beams D by bolts d, and kept in position by segmental rods F, which are fastened to the sides of the plow-beams by hooked clamp-bolts f, the heads of which are pivoted to the shanks E by loose rivets 0. Be-
tween two parallel braces, G, which are fastened to the axletree B, a roller, H, is pivoted, which, by a number of chains, d, holds the beams D suspended, and, by turning a handle, g, on the roller, the beams may be elevated considerably from the ground, and they may be secured in that position by slipping the drophook I over the corner of the roller. If it is desirable to pass one or the other plow over of such plows with handles D which I fasten to the sides of the beams, and steady them with braces ll". At the center of the axletree also a spare hole for each bolt, in case the hounds should want to be fastened with a different inclination. The tongue is attached to the bolt N at the front ends of the hounds. The teams are attached to the draw-bars p, which are attached to the levers P, with their fulcrums p fastened to the axle-tree B by means of the pin Z. The levers l? are doublearmed, and are connected, by rods 0, to an equalizing-lever, O, fastened by a bolt, t, to the cross-bar L. The draw-bars p are held in a horizontal position by being passed through the eyes of two suspended rods, g, which are fastened to a crossbar, Q, on the hounds K. The cross-bar Q is secured to the hounds K by clasps k. I hereby avoid a one-sided strain on my machine, which would be the result of applying the draft to the tongue, as is usually done, because the arch J would have to trans fer all the power to the axle-tree, and for that purpose would have to be unusually strong and heavy to prevent it from bending or working with jerks, like a spring.
In working with plows I use the same mode of attachment and adjustment as with the cuL tivators, with two exceptions. The first differ ence consists in the use of one plow-beam for two plow-standards and two plow-shovels, and the mode of fastening the shovels with sockets S and set-screws s to the ends of the plowstandards E. The other difference exists at the end of the plow-beam, as represented by Figs. 3 and 4; the junction with the axle-tree being effected by two vertical laps, d fastened to the end of the plow-beam D, embracing a pivothead, (1 to which they are pivoted, the said pivot-head forming a part of the horizontal clamp-plate D which is inserted between the slot of the middle link, I), of the axle-tree, and for the purpose of which the said middle link is provided with two lugs, 11, between which the clamp-plate D is fastened by a bolt. The mode of attaching the shovels with sockets enables the operator to construct the shovels with two working ends, so that they may be reversed, like the shovel It. (Seen in Figs. 3 and 4.)
The axle-tree B may be made long or short by adding or removing as many of the slotted links I) as are necessary for the purpose, the middle link retaining its place, for the sake of its peculiar construction and purpose, except when corn-rows are to be cultivated with a tolerably high growth of corn, in which case it is removed, so that the open arch J may pass over the corn without injuring it. The slotted links I) may be overlapped more or less, to allow the fastening and arrangement of the bearings O at any desirable distances. It must, of course, be understood that, if the roller H is to be used, the length of the axle-tree must be corresponding.
In case of obstructions by very tough and tangled weeds, I make use of a knife-blade, T, which is fastened to the plow-beam D, and may be adjusted so as to enter the ground when it is necessary to cut any roots. The plow-beams D, in Figs. 3 and 4, are provided with eyebolts a, for the purpose of suspending them on the hooks U, fastened to the hounds K, when the machine is to be moved without plowing.
Fig. 5 shows one of the weed-cutting knives, the adjustability of it consisting in a bolt-hole, t, serving as fulcrum, and a slot, t, serving as adjustable means for fastening.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The expansible axle-tree B, consisting of the slotted links I), substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with a drag-beam, D, of the shovel-plow and the adjustable weedcutting knifeblade attached to the sides of said drag-beam, and extending rearwardly of the share, as shown, and for the purpose mentioned.
3. In a cultivator, the detachable middle slotted link I), in combination with the arch J, substantially as specified.
4. The fulcrum p, with its connectionpin Z, in combination with the slotted extension-axle B, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
DAVID B. EBERLY.
