1 Claim.

This invention relates to so-called handy sewing kits, and is concerned primarily with the provision of a novel type of kit in which all the materials and implements are assembled in a compact form in a distinctly novel manner.

Handy sewing kits of the type with which this invention is concerned ordinarily include a proper supply of thread, which may take the form of any number of desired colors, and one or more needles which are placed in a tubular container. This preferably is of a transparent material.

The present invention proposes to follow the above noted practice, but goes further and includes a thimble as part of the kit. Not only is the thimble provided for the ordinary sewing purposes, but the thimble is also designed to constitute a closure for the extremity of the tubular container.

More in detail this invention has in view as an important object the provision of a sewing kit of the character above noted, which includes a tubular container made from a transparent material having the property of flexibility to a desired degree.

This tubular container is closed at one end, and at the other end is formed with an inwardly opening groove, which is designed to receive the flange of a sewing thimble to hold the latter in place, whereby the thimble is constituted a 010- sure for the tube.

Various other more detailed objects and advantages will in part become apparent, and in part be hereinafter stated, as the description of the invention proceeds.

The invention, therefore, comprises a handy sewing kit made up of a source of thread supply which is housed in a tubular container. This tubular container is made from an appropriate flexible transparent material, and is closed at one end. Adjacent to the open end of the tubular container the latter is formed with an inwardly openinggroove, and a thimble is positioned with its flange extending into this groove whereby the thimble is constituted a closure for the container. Needles, pins and other accessories may be included in the container along with the thread.

For a full and more complete understanding of the invention reference may be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, wherein:

Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a com-- 'pletely assembled sewing kit, made in accordance with the precepts of this invention,

Figure 2 is a detailed view in section of the tubular container,

Figure 3 is a side elevational showing of the thimble, and

Figure 4 is a view in side elevation bringing out the manner of assembling the source of thread supply.

Referring now to the drawing, wherein like reference characters denote correspondingparts, a tubular container is shown in Figure 2 and referred to generally by the reference character ID. This tubular container It) may be made from any appropriate material which has the desired property of flexibility, for a purpose to be hereinafter pointed out.

In the preferred embodiment, the invention contemplates the use of a transparent material such as may be made from a proper composition of pyroxylin and camphor.

As shown in Figure 2, the tubular container It) comprises a cylindrical wall it and an end wall l2, which closes one end of the tube. Adjacent to the open end this cylindrical wall It is deformed to provide an inwardly opening groove l3. The extremity of the cylindrical wall may be slightly flared, as indicated at M.

Figure 4 develops an arrangement of mounting a plurality of small reels of thread. Referring to this figure it is noted that a spindle, designated l5, may be made from any appropriate material, such as pasteboard, and preferably has a hollow construction, as shown at l6.

Mounted on the spindle l5 are a plurality of individual reels of thread H, which may be of any color to meet the particular trade requirements'.

The assembly comprising a spindle l5 and the reels of thread I? is designed to snugly flt within the tubular container 40, and when the parts have been so assembled a thimble, shown in Figure 3, and referred to as l8, may be availed of as a closure for the open end of the container iii. The thimble i8 is formed with a flange IS, in the usual manner, which is designed to be received within the groove l3. 7

Due to the fact that the container I0 is of a flexible material, the cylindrical wall at the open mouth l4 will'yield slightly so as to permit the reception of the flange l9 in the groove l3 with a well-known snap action.

When the parts are assembled, as shown in Figure 1, the thimble is effective to prevent accidental removal of the materials contained within the tubular container H3.

Other accessories, such as of the needle shown at 20, or pins, indicated at 2|, may also be included as a part of the sewing kit. These may be assembled in the manner shown in Figure 4, or merely placed in the container between the cylindrical wall and the reels of thread.

When it is desired to use the kit for sewing purposes the thimble I8 may be removed by applying a sidewise pressure to the extremity thereof. This causes the thimble to tilt with respect to the axis of the tubular container !0, removing first one side of the flange l9 from the groove l3, after which the thimble as an entirety may be removed. Figure 1 develops dotted lines showing this mode of operation.

While a preferred specific embodiment of the invention is hereinbefore set forth, it is to be clearly understood that I am not to be limited to the exact construction illustrated and described, because various modifications of these details may be provided in putting this invention into practice within the purview of the appended claim.

I claim:

A handy sewing kit of the character described comprising a tubular container adapted to receive sewing materials, said container having an open end formed with an inwardly opening groove, and. a thimble having a flange detachably received in said groove, said thimble constituting a closure for the container, with the flange and groove cooperating to provide a snap fastener for positioning the thimble.
