nited States Patent l This invention pertains to an improved holder which functions as a darner ball or egg for properly darning socks, stockings, and the like, and at the sametime is constructed in a particular manner to provide 'parts,and places to hold .various desirable elements ,usually .found in'a sewing kit. Among these various elements are thread, thimble, needles, pins and scissors. t

One of the important jean; s of the-improved =invention hereinis to provide annit rnember which-acts. as a darning head, ball or egg, and has a carrying handle for the various sewing or darning elements, and which handle performs the handle function for the enlarged ball end. Such a unit member or device preferably has a smooth exterior and the only extension therefrom is that of a small portion of desirable scissors. Also this improved holder or unit member is so shaped with its smooth exterior that the enlarged ball end thereof performs the darning head or egg formation and the smaller portion acts as the handle and is of smaller diameter.

Another feature of the improved invention is to provide an enlarged or ball or egg part of the holder and to construct the handle therefor for holding pins and needles while at the same time having firmly engaged therewith a supporting part or tube for receiving small units of thread, or in place thereof, may receive a series of small spools of thread. Also this support acts to carry a thimble. in addition, the handle is provided ,with an opening in which small shears or scissors may be inserted preferably with frictional engagement.

A further feature of this invention is to provide a darning unit or holder or member of at least two joined parts creating a smooth exterior, and wherein one part is enlarged to act as the darning ball portion or end, and the other part acts as the handle to the first part or ball portion, and preferably in this case the handle carries the usual darning or sewing elements or materials.

Another main feature of this invention is to provide a separable unit of smooth exterior, a part of which acts as the darning ball or egg and another part acts as the handle, and to include within the improved holder special constructions that allow all of the necessary elements or materials to be carried by the handle within the holder. It will be noted that while the handle portion of the holder carries the scissors and that part of the scissors will project a little from the handle but usually will be in line with the longer axis of the novel holder. Referring now to the drawings, the novel holder 15 is .shown in Fig. 1 as preferably comprising a darner ball, or egg, end 16, and a handle 17 and a support ,extensionlS thereon for h olding a series of spools of thread 19and for holding a suitable thirnble 20. iInaddition, the handle 17 is preferably slotted as shown at 2 1 forreceiving a small pairof shears or scissors 22. The various parts of the combined darner and sewing kit holder are shown in the exploded view, Fig. 1. When these. parts are assembled {to .form a unit member or holder, reference is made to Fig.2 with .thevarious parts of the holderinsection.

In the preferred construction of this improved holder, the enlarged ,darnerball .end.1,6 is shown as being hollow, and in this instance, .is transparentby reason of .manufac- (curing the same of a,relativelyjransparent plasticmaterial. if desired, this part of the holder be v.rnade of wood or metal, or of any other suitablemieterial.

In providing this novel darnenand sewing .kit holder, it is preferredto havethe sewingkit elementsheld within the holder itself, and Fig. 2 shows such a preferred arrangement. In providing a suitable type of improved holder with an enlarged darning ball end and a handle, it has been found satisfactory to construct the holder of two parts as represented by 16 and 17. A suitable manner of joining these two parts together is shown by having a screw thread extension 18 as part of the handle 17 and this screw thread extension is received in screw threads 23 of the darning ball end, as noted in Fig. 2.

Any suitable manner may be employed for holding the various sewing kit elements inside the holder and a preferred manner herein comprises a first tube 25 carried by the screw threaded extension 18. This tube is hollow and is adapted to receive any desirable number of pins and needles and is capped by a suitable cap 26. It is also desirable to properly support a series of darning cottons or threads within the holder 15 and one of the satisfactory ways of accomplishing this result is by providing a second tube 27 which is preferably positioned over the outside of tube 25 and is usually concentric therewith. The series of spools of thread 19 are illustrated as engaging the second tube 27. If desired, instead of using the small spools 19, the various threads or series of threads may be wound on the second tube 27 in various positions which correspond to those shown in Fig. 1 as at 19. Another sewing kit element is a thimble 20 and it is preferably positioned to engage the series of darning cottons or threads at the top of the second tube 27. With this arrangement the desirable elements of the sewing kit are found to be easily handled, supported and assembled within the hollow darner ball end and carried by the handle 17.

Another desirable sewing kit element is a pair of shears 22 and they may be carried in the holder in any suitable manner, but in this instance, it is preferred to have the shears carried so that they are readily disassembled from the holder, and instead of providing a holding position for them inside of the darner ball end, a slit or slot 21 is formed in the handle and extends longitudinally of the handle from its free end 28 and is so positioned that the scissors will engage the handle frictionally and will be retained in the holder without being in a position to be disassembled .by slight knocks but stillable tobe withdrawn without too great an effort.

It will, therefore, be noted that the novel combination darner and sewing kit holder is formed with a smooth exterior surface, and is preferably composed of a transparent plastic, and is constructed in a satisfactory and suitable manner wherein the elements of the sewing kit are carried within the holder. The handle 17 may be of Wood, plastic, metal, or other material as desired.

In Fig. 5 there is illustrated the present form of darner ball or egg that has been on the market for many years, and this darner with its handle 29 is made of solid wood. The illustrated darner in Fig. 5 is included for the purpose of showing the contrast of the improved holder illustrated in Fig. 2.

It will be noted from the foregoing description that the improved and novel darner and sewing kit holder is of smooth exterior and provides a type of holder that always has all of the sewing kit elements associated with it, and preferably has all of them or most of them mounted inside of the holder, as especially shown in Fig. 2.

It will also be noted that the preferred structure of this improved darning and sewing kit holder provides for practically all of the sewing kit elements to be held in position on or in the handle which is readily assembled withthe holder darning ball end.

It will be understood that various modifications and changes maybe made in the preferred form of the invention herein, and such modifications and changes are to be understood as part of this invention, as outlined in the following claims.

The invention claimed is:

1. In a combined darner and sewing kit holder, the

combination of two parts both composed of plastic material joined together to form a smooth exterior surface and contoured to have one part form a darner ball end and the other part to form the handle of said holder, said handle having a screw threaded extension at one end, said darner ball end being screw threaded at its open end for receiving the screw threaded portion of said handle, a first tube carried by said threaded extension for receiving pins and needles therein, a cap for closing the free end of said tube, a second tube positioned outside of said first tube and being substantially concentric therewith carrying on its exterior a series of darning threads, a thimble for engaging some of said threads at the upper end of said second tube, said handle being provided with an open slit extending from its free end longitudinally for receiving a pair of scissors in frictional engagement, the walls of said open slit being close enough together to frictionally engage some part of the scissors to hold them in position in said darner.

2. In a darner and sewing kit formed of a darner ball and a handle, the combination of a darner ball of smooth exterior and of hollow construction, a handle to be assembled with said darner ball, a small diameter tube carried by said handle and adapted to extend into the darner ball end and being hollow for receiving needles and pins, a second tube for sliding over the first tube, a series of spools of thread positioned over the outside of said second tube, and a thimble engaging the top series of said spools for holding them in position.
