3 Claims.
My invention relates to a new and useful display device and it relates more particularly to a cardboard knock-down display device which is capable of being shipped in the form of flat sheets which are easily erected. into the desired display device Without any skill and with minimum effort.
My invention still further relates to a display device adapted to represent in animated fashion a person, animal or other object closely connected with or suggestive of the idea desired to be conveyed by the display, thereby greatly enhancing the advertising value of said display.
My invention still further relates to a display device which is extremely inexpensive to produce and the essential elements of which lend themselves to an almost infinite variety in details whereby an almost infinite variety of objects may be embodied or represented.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 represents a front elevation of a display device embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 represents a section on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 represents a section on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 represents a rear plan view of the blank forming the upper portion of the display device shown in the flat condition.
Fig. 5 represents a plan view of the blank of which the bottom portion of the display device is made, also shown in the flat condition.
Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing a modified form of construction.
Fig. 7 is a section on line of Fig. 6.-
Fig. 8 is a cross section on line 88 of Fig. 6.
Fig. 9 represents a rear plan View of the blank forming the top portion of the display.
Fig. 10 represents a plan view of the blank forming the bottom portion of the display.
Referring to the drawings in which like reference characters indicate like parts, my display device in both of the forms of invention illustrated consists generally of an upper section representing the body portion of the person, such as the boy in Fig. 1 and Santa Claus in Fig. 6, it being understood that the upper portion can represent an Easter rabbit for advertising hams, Easter candies, or any other appropriate impersonification, and the bottom portion generally represents the legs for supporting the body portion, the legs being appropriately formed to correspond to and harmonize with the top portion.
Referring to Fig. 1, it will be seen that the top body portion is formed of a single blank I having the proper contour and having on the face thereof a representation of a human face and a human body supporting a flashlight 2 which is the object to be advertised in this instance, the tab 3 bearing an inscription or slogan relating to the name of the manufacturer and tothe merits of the flashlight to be advertised. In addition to 5 the blank I having a contour to represent the upper half of a childs bodydressed as desired,
it is provided at the back thereof with the connecting cardboard piece .4, the ends of which are creased and glued to the blank I as at 5. The con- 10 nectin piece 4 is provided with the inverted V-shaped slot for engaging corresponding slots in the upper edge of the bottom piece which will next be described.
The lower half of the representation shown in Fig. 1 is also formed of a single blank 6 Which is of a substantially rectangular contour and which is provided with the center slot I. The blank 6 is adapted to be folded upon itself so that its lateral tabs 8 will enter the slot 1 with the slots 9 adjacent the tabs 8 engaging the bottom edge IU of the slot 1. When the blank 6 is so folded it will assume the shape of the two legs H, the face of the blank being printed to represent pajamas or other apparel and being also provided with the representation of shoes or slippers l2. When the blank 6 is folded to form the legs II the slots l3 in the upper edge I4 thereof are in contiguous registration and are adapted to receive and engage the. V-shaped cut-out in the connecting piece 4 while the bottom edges I5 and [6 of the connecting piece 4 engage the slots l1 and I8, respectively, in the upper edge of the blank 6. In this way the upper portion of the body is detachably but firmly secured at three places to the lower leg portion and the bottom portion forming the two edges affords a stable support for the display. It will thus be seen that the bottom section 6 can be printed and out in a single operation and that the top portion I can also be cut and printed in a. single operation and completely finished by the mere attachment thereto of the connecting piece 4. It will also be seen that the assembling of the device to assume the position shown in Fig. 1 is almost instantaneous, since it is merely necessary to bend the blank 6 and to insert the tabs 6 and 8 in the slot 1 whereupon the V-shaped cut-out of the portion 4 is inserted into the slots I3 and the edges l5 and I6 of the connecting portion 4 5 are engaged by the slots H and I8. The finished device produces a very effective composite display having the appearance of an integral device.
In Figs. 6 and 8 the bottom portion 2|] is also a rectangular blank having one or more tabs 2 I, on each end, which are adapted to engage correspondingslots 22. Then the blank is folded to form the legs 23 shown in Fig. 6. The top portion 24 is also a single blank cut to the proper contour and is provided with the creased end tabs 26, the slots 21 of which are adapted to engage the upper pair of tabs 2| of the blank 20. In order to make the body portion stand out from the rest of the top blank 24, the blank 24 is out along the lines 29 so that when the device is completely assembled the fastening tabs 26areback of the body portion proper. The face of the blank 20 is suitably printed to represent trousers and boots, such as are traditionally the habiliment of Santa Claus, while the front face of the blank 24 is also printed to represent Santa Claus carrying packages, etc.
I claim:
1. A display device comprising a lower section formed of a single printed blank having a center slot and end tabs for engaging said center slot and being adapted to be bent to simulate on its outer face the appearance of costumed legs, an upper printed section cut into a contour to simulate the appearance of the upper half of a body corresponding to and harmonizing with said legs, and means for detachably securing said upper section to said lower section.
2. A display device comprising a lower printed section formed of a single blank having lateral tabs and a central slot and being adapted to be bent to simulate the appearance of costumed legs with said tabs engaging said center slot, an upper printed section cut into a contour to represent the upper half of a body corresponding to and harmonizing with said legs, and a connecting piece secured to the back of said upper section, said connecting piece having a central slot there- 'in and bottom edges on either side of said slot, said center slot and said bottom edges being said tabs are engaging said slot, an upper printed 20 section also formed of a single blank and cut into a contour to represent the upper half of a body corresponding to and harmonizing with said legs, and rearwardly deflected lateral tabs integral with said upper section and having slots 25 therein adapted to engage the tabs in said lower section detachably to secure said upper section to said lower section.
