REINHARD;` OP PROCKTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIQNOR To enolwfn E. BELCHER COMPANY, or STOUGPITON, MASSAOHUSETTS,A CORPORATION OF ivrAssa- OHUSETTS DISPLAY FORM Application sied June e, 1925;l -seriai No. 35,434.`
In the vending of certain articles of apparel it has been found most advantageous to displayth'e garment as Wornvony a gure or member so that it will 'appeary in its normal state ,of presentation or, if possible, one even more attractive, so that merchandising vmay be stimulated by a faithful or, if possible,
flattering suggestion of appearance.
o The presentation of articles of nether apparel in such a manner has proven difcult,
but in logical conclusion has come to a disf play upon an artificial or model limb.
This has developed a serious problem be-v tween the province of the sculptor and the V15. manufacturer.
Obviously, Athe resultanty article or limb model must be so artistic as to provide the incentive lto purchase. It must also be a cheap and ready article ,ofV merchandise.
Wooden legs have been turned and'ot-her Y more convenientv and'artistic models attempted. I believe my own production is complete Vand novel and has proven by immediate popularity, a filling of a ylong felt Want. Y
A part of the difficulty has been productability, appart lightness and convenience and a part mechanicaladaptability to the pur pose of display. v
In producing al display model-for hosiery 3Othe problem is toV derive from the suitably Sculptured model a commercial form artistically satisfactory and sufficiently cheap to permit its use inmerchandising.- Y
- The ordinary Wooden leg is classically impossible. A clean-cut, beautifully modeled,
esthetically `finishedy formis required. Anf otherphase of the problem has been that of supporting such a displayv member andin so doing Without destroyingthe natural effect of the limb` member.. This requirementhas doubtless inspired the previous suggestion of a sole engaging Stand'but the presence of a stocking on the form makessuch a support diliicult to'eifect. Y Y Y I Willdescribe a product in accordance With my invention, Which is capable of commerlcial production but which may carry a merchandlsing persuasiveness, as has been demonstrated in practical use.
To illustrate suchv a device, I, have shown av forminthe accompanying drawing; To
this, `the specification makes reference by conventional characters.
Fig. l is va general view 'of a form as in display. if y l Fig. 2 isa longitudinal 4Section ofathe foot and'base.` Y V Y F ig. 3 a transverse section Aof the same, and `Figjll a section asused Without base.
Instead of providing a turned or casty solid form, I provide va moulded shell-like formof' libre orlike st ock.V Thisjgives a hol- In'these drawings: y
louT -model which is kof immediatefvalue fas f light and convenient. It is also capable of a variety of'usages and practices not hereto- In this form` as shovvn, I provide amoulded y l Valso receive'and skillfully display the article, such as alstocking, in perfect presentation of its bestfpossible appearance.
e It willbe understood that While-the upper i limb-may be successfully enlarged .in the model to give fulleffect, thefoot cannot be made Vlarger than normal. This' makes a problem in the case of an yunsymmetrical limb.r The stocking'must fit the Wearenbut the modelmust not admitthe irregularity;
Furthermore, the model vmust bel supported or held upright'to give theliving or lifelike effect. To'provide for this,l as Well' as toaccomplish lthe impossible in the y'previously stated" requirement'of compensation, I have devised a simple structure(v l My foot formjl' is hollox'v as moulded from stock and' openatthe bottom. y.
This gives me al possibility of reception of .Surplus foot `stock of i the .lhose i displayed on the form. In addition, I utilize it asa me- Y chanical asset by providing a base 4 and a cleat 5.
The cleat 5 is of simple T-shaped form. It j may be interlockedwith the hollow foot form 5 1, not only vto support the form, but to draw Ytight,tl1e Stocking (or other article)` over the form to make a perfect andattractive fit. Y
At its upper end (of whatever length) the form is left partially open so as toV receive o anyexcess of stocking, lingerie or other ydrap-` ery, required to setolthe .niodel. For eX- A' ample, the slack in the foot of the stocking may be taken up through this opening in fthe v sole by inserting a clip member 6 which is 15 turned sidewise to engage the flange ll'wh'i-ch lsurrounds the edge of the foot sole. This is depended'upon Where the form is not used on 'its usual stand or wherev it isv to be4 removed from the stand Nfor inspection. I further provide for this taking up of slack by utilizing the interlocking device of my base 4.
The interlocking ofthe cleat 5 by the, simple turning of the foot l on it, gives, therefore, both physical support and artistic drapa; ery `to the stocking foot which will be shown as fitting at its best.
The model is light and easy to carry. Itis easily manufactured by moulding such material as board about a form, fitting, gluing and joining to give a complete shell. This may be painted and iinished so as to give the representation( of the natural limb at its best. l Also,V it provides the best possible means of Y display mounting.
' Various modiiications may be made. Such devices maybe variously m anufactured. All Iy desire by my present application is protectifon commensurate by my claim.
W'hatV I therefore claim and desire to Vsefd cure b y Letters Patent is: i
