nmmrmrf I htmmw NAPETRS. PHOTO-LITHgOGRAPHER.' WASHINGTON. D C4 'UNITED STATES -PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN MCSHARY, OF MANSFIELD, OHIO.
IM PROVEM ENT IN TRUSSES.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 197,386, dated November 20, 1877; application filed September 17, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN MCSHARY, of Mansfield, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trusses; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and eX-' act description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a truss, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawing, to which reference is made, and which fully illustrates my invention, Figure 1 is a front View, and Fig. 2 a rear view, of my truss. Fig. 3 is a section through the pad.
A represents a Waist-belt, elastic or otherwise, fastened in front by an ordinary strap and buckle, and this belt is suspended over the shoulders by ordinary Suspenders B B fastened to the belt, both at the front and rear, by straps and buckles, so as to be adjustable for any sized person.
From the front of the belt A pass two elastic bands, C G, one on each side, between the legs of the wearer to the back of the belt, on opposite sides, the two belts orbands O crossing each other, as shown. These bands are connected to the belt A by means of straps a and buckles b, so as to be adjusted in any manner desired, and bring the pressure on either or both sides, as required.
The bands C O pass through loops d d, at-
i tached at right angles to each other on theback of the pad D, which may be made of wood, rubber, or any other material suitable for the-purpose.
It will readily be seen that this pad is adjustable in any direction upon the bands C C, and bymeans of the adjustability o f saidbands, and these bands crossing each other, the pad will be held at any point desired, and brought to bear with any pressure required.
The various bands and belts being elastic, the truss accommodates itself to the movements of the wearer without causing any inconvenience, and without deranging the position of the pad in any way when once adjusted in. position.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a truss, the elastic bands C C, crossing each other between the legs of the wearer and passing through loops d d, arranged at right angles to each other on the back of the pad D, substantially as herein set forth.
2. The combination of the waist-belt A, suspenders B B. adjustable cross-bands C O, and the adjustable pad D with loops d, d, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set v forth. A
In testimony that I claim: the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAivrEs F. MCMILLEN.
