Description
March 6, 1934. L.. R. N. CARVALHO BOTTLE 'AND JAR CLOSURE Filed March 9, 1931 Patented Mar. 6, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BOTTLE A'ND JAR CLOSURE Leslie R. N. Canalho, Toledo, Ohio, asslgnor to The Closure Service Company, Toledo, Ohio, a
corporation of Ohio The present invention relates to improvements in closures for bottles and jars and more particularly to that type of closure adapted to carry a fluid dispensing implement such as an applicator rod.
An object of the present invention is the provision of an improved practical construction in which the applicator" rod or other similar dispensing implement, is separably connected to-the closure and performs the secondary .function of removably aflixing a sealing gasket to the closure.
.Other objects of the invention will be in part apparent and in part pointed out hereinafter.
In the drawing: v
Fig. 1 is a sectional elevational view illustrating my invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation showing the closure, sealing, gasket, and applicator" rod separated.
Referring to the drawing, a bottle 5 is sho sealed by a closure 6 constructed in accordance with the present invention. The bottle has a neck '7, the upper portion of which is reduced in diameter and provided with external screw threads 8 adapted to engage corresponding internal threads 9 on the skirt'lO or flange, of the closure 6.
The closure 6, in the form illustrated, is molded.
Any suitable material such as is widely used at the present time in the manufacture of mold closures, may well be used. Obviously, it is not desired to limit the present invention to the use of a molded cap since other forms may be embodied.
The circular top portion 11 from which the internally threaded skirt 10 depends is provided with a threaded recess 12 in its inner face, the axis of which is intended to be substantially-in line with the axis of the bottle 5. An applicator rod 13, or other fluid dispensing implement, preferably formed of glass, is separably connected to 50 the closure 6 and for this purpose is provided at one end with an externally threaded head 14 which is screwed into the threaded recess 12. A circular shoulder 15 is provided just below the head 14 and faces upwardly for the purpose of 35 securing a sealing gasket 16 in place by clamping it against the top portion of the closure. The manner in which the several elements are assembled is entirely obvious.
Modifications may be resorted to within the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
I claim:
A molded closure comprising a circular top portion and adepending attaching flange, said flange having internal screw threads, said top portion provided with a downwardly facing threaded recess disposedcoaxially with respect to the attaching flange, a sealing gasket disposed in contact with the lower side of said top portion and having an opening in register with said recess, a glass applicator rod having an enlarged screw threaded head formed integral with one end and screwed into said recess, and a continuous upwardly facing shoulder below and of greater diameter than said head for securing the gasket in engagement 85 with the lower side of the-top portion.
LESLIE R. N. CARVALHO.
