RATION' 0F NEW YORK MARYLAND, A. OOBPO-- CONVEYEB FOR BOTTLE SEALING AND EI'LIIITNG4 MEOHAN'IBM Application mea .Tune 1.1, 1930. sel-m1 1ro. 4so,aaz.

This invention relates to bottle sealing and filling mechanism and more particularlyto improved mechanism for automatically carrying bottles or containers into position for 5 fillin and sealin for holding them in position uring the fi ling and sealing operation and for thereafter carrying them away from the filling and sealin stations to 'a point where they wise disposed of.`

One of theobjects of this invention is to i provide mechanism of the character referred to which is efficient in operation and requires a minimum of skill and attention on the part of the operator. l

Another ob'ect of the invention is to pro- 4 vide improve mechanism for adapting the machine for different size bottles or` containers.

Other objects, novel features and advantages of the invention will be a parent from the following specification an accompanyin drawings, wherein:

ig. 1 is a front perspective view of a bottle filling machine embodying the invention;

Fig.' 2 is a plan view of the feeding mechanism;

30 Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2'

,Fig. 4 is a section on the lin'e 4-4 of Fig.

may readi y be crated or other-v ing head 11 b suitable conduits (not shown). Caps or sealing the bottles are, fed through the chute 12 into water filling and capping head 13. Power for operating the said mechanism embodied in the machine (which mechanism is not shown and described in detail sinceit forms no art of the present invention) is `supplied rom a motor` 14 which drives a fly wheel `15 through the medium of a belt 16. Control of ower to the mechanism may be accomp ished through the medium of a hand wheel 17 operating a clutch or through a suitable clutch handle (not shown). Bottles to be filled are presented under th syrup filling head 11 and water filling and capping head 13 by means of a conveyer supported by the table 18. At one end of v the table 18 is provided a shaft 19 on which three super osed wheels 20 are rotatably mounted. t the other end of the table 18 there is provided a shaft 21 on the upper end of which are rotatably mounted. three superposed wheels 22. The bottom wheel 22 rests on a plate 23 keyed to thev shaft 21 andA 7 a plate 24 also keyed to the shaft 21 rests on the top sprocket 22 and is held in position by a bolt 25.

Two stub shafts 26 and 27 are journalled in the plates 23 and 24 and extend through u apertures provided in the wheels 22. The upper end of the shaft 27 projects above the plate 24 and is shaped to receive a key.. The shaft 27 is provided with gear teeth extending the full distance between the plates 23 and 24 and the shaft 26 is providedl with gear teeth only over its lower half. Each wheel 22 is provided with a segmental rack 28, the racks for the upper and lower lwheels 8'5 meshin with the teeth of the shaft 27 While the rac for the middle wheel meshes with the teeth on the shaft 26. The wheels 20 and 22 are provided with uniformly spaced sockets 20'* and 22". An endless chain 29 is 9 trained around each pair of wheels 20 and Each chain is formed of links 30 having studsl 30a projecting through apertures 1n -adjacent links.: Each link also is provided with a perpendicular arm 31. .The studsv 30Il are adapted to be received in the sockets. ',l and 22 and rotation vof' ,the shaft 21 by' means later, to be, described causes movement of the chain. Between the wheels 20 and 22 there are provided guides 32 having usl v accurately relative to the filling and Vca ping devices. Guides`33 and 34 are provi ed to be engaged by the bottles to insure alinement of the bottles with respect to the filling and capping mechanisms. These guides are adjustable to take care of different diameter bottles. Likewise, the spacing of the fingers 31r isadjustable to accommodate: bottles of different diameter. This adjustment is accomplishedv bysrmeans of the stub shafts 26 and 27 by whichjnia be varied the angular lrelation of the mid e wheel 22 to the topl and bottom wheels.' Although the width of the'pockets is-'varied the spacing betweenV the center linesY ofthe pockets remains unchanged.

The shaft 21is intermittently rotated by means not described or shown in detail t0 advance the feeding mechanism in step by step operation. BottlesV to'V -filled and capped are supplied to the feeding mechanism by means of the conveyer -35 and pusher 36 and are delivered from the feeding mechanism to a conveyer 37 which carries filled bottles to a crating or boxing station, not shown. v

It is of course apparent that modificatlons ma be made 1n' the apparatus above. describe without in any way'- departing from the spiritv ofthe invention as deined in the appended claims.

I claim: 1. In combination, a conveyer comprising a plurality of superposed allne'd belts havmg fingers forming pockets, means for supporting and'driving said belts, and means for relatively adjusting said belts in the direction of travel to vary the .width of said pockets. j

2. In combination, a shaft, a plurality of wheels rotatably mounted thereon, racks on said wheelsa pair of meshed pinions of which onemeshes with certain of said racks and the Vother meshes with the remainder,

supporting means for said pinions keyed to said shaft, a jbelt passing around each wheel, and fingers carried by each belt.

Y 3. In combination, a shaft, a plurality of wheels mounted on said shaft, a belt passingaround each wheel, fingers carried by each belt, means for rotatingv said'wheels in unison, and means for adjusting the angular relation of said wheels.

4. 'In combination, an endless conveyer comprising a plurality of superposed alined belts, each belt being composed of links having angular arms, means to actuate said belts in unison, and ymeans to vary the relative position of the fingers of each belt in the direction of travel.

5. In combmation, a conveyer comprising -a pluralit of superposed alined belts composed of inks having angular arms, means for supporting said belts, .guide members having grooves, and studs on said links slidable in said grooves.

6. In combination, a shell, a plurality of Wheels rotatably mounted thereon, racks on said wheels, a pair of meshed pinions of which one meshes with certain of said racks and the other meshes with the remainder, supportingmeans for said pinions keyed to said shaft, a belt fastened around each wheel,

veach belt being. composed of links having angular arms, guide members having grooves, and studs on said links slidable in said grooves'.

7. In combination, a shaft, a plurality of wheels mounted on saidY shaft, a belt fastened around each Wheel and being composed-of links having angular arms, guide members havingY grooves, studs on said links slidable in said grooves, meansl for rotating said wheels in unison, and means for adjusting the angular relation of said wheels.

8, In combination, an endless conveyer comprising a plurality of superposed alined belts,.each belt being composed of llinks having angular arms, guide members having grooves, Vstuds on said links' slidable in said grooves, means to actuate said belts in unison, and means tovary the relative position of the fingers of said belts in the direction of travel.

9. In combination, a conveyer comprising a plurality of superposed alined belts comosed of linkshaving angular arms form- -lng pockets, means for supporting and driving saidV belts, vI neans for relatively adjusting said belts in the direction of travel to vary the width of said pocket, guide members'having grooves and studs on said links slidable in said grooves,

10. In combination, a conveyer comprising va plurality of 'superposed alined belts composed of links having angular arms forming pockets, means for supporting and driving said belts, means for relatively adjusting said belts in the direction of vtravel to vary the width of said pockets, and guide members engaging said belts.

` 11. In Combmationl, a conveyer comprising a plurality of superposed alined belts composed of links having angular arms forming pockets, means for supporting and driving said belts, means for relatively ad-V justing said belts 'ein the direction of travel to var the widthV of said pockets, and adjustabl, guide members defining a chute for articles arranged in said ockets.

In testimony whereof, have signed my my name to this specification.-
