E. E. MACK & F. COOK.
coMBINED COLLAR AND TOY MONEY-Box.
No. 190,504. l Patented May 8,1877.

N PETERS. PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTDN, D C.
UNITED ED ELISHA MACK AND FREDRICK COOK, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK; SAID COOK ASSIGNOR TO SAID MACK.
I IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED COLLAR AND TOV MONEY BOX.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 590,504, dated May 8, 1877; application led February 12, 1877.
To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that we, ED ELISHA MACK and FREDRIGK COOK, both of the city and county of Albany, State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Packing-Boxes for Collars and Cuffs, and like small articles, which improvements are `fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a sectional elevation of a box having the improvements in this invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same in the transverse. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the cover, with its adjunctive locking devices; and Fig. 4 is a horizontal view taken at lines No. 1 in Figs. 1 and 2.
The object of our invention is to furnish a combination of devices by which a packingbox for collars, cuffs, &c., in store or transit,
may be readily converted, when emptied of its contents by the consumer, into a moneybank or money-box, with its cover locked in a concealed manner, and without liability of warping or splitting.
In the drawings, A represents the body ofthe box, which is made of wood, of any desirable form, either polygon, square, or round, as may be selected. B is the cover, made also wood, and composed of two pieces, a and b, consisting of two panels, so arranged in relation to each other that their direction of grain will be in transverse directions, or running across each other, as shown in Fig. 8. The said transversely -arranged pieces are cemented together by glue, or its known equivalent, or may be secured by both cement and nails, or screws. The said cover thus formed has the piece a, with an extension in all directions, and a form of margin or edge that will fit the inner periphery of the body A of the box, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 4. The piece bis made with an extension in all directions, and a form of margin or edge that will project out to the plane of the outer surface of the sides of the body of the box, or past the same, as shown. Made in the said cover is the narrow oblong slot c, made vertically through both pieces ot the cover, with a length equal to about the diameter of a silver half-dollar, and a width about equal to the thickness of said piece, so as to admit of a ready passage of a piece oi' coin through the same.
This box, with its cover, is provided with concealed devices for securing the two, parts together, and may consist of the levers O2 C2, provided With spurs d d, and pivoted to the lower side ofthe cover in such a manner that when the said levers are in position of full lines, Fig. 3, the covermay be readily removed, and when turned to position of full lines in Fig. 4, the said spurs may be thrown into recess a2, made in the sides of the box, as shown, to hold the cover securely with the body ofthe box; or the fastening device may consist of the bar D, provided with spur d', adapted to enter recess x', made in a side of the body of the box when the said bar is slid forward.
When the said sliding bar is employed, We would prefer to so place it that its longitudinal movement may bein direction ofthe slot c, and would provide, with the said bar, the lip c, rising up in the said slot, to operate as aconvenient piece to engage with some instrument for moving the said bar in either direction, as-may be required. Though two such devices may be employed, yet we would prefer to employ one such device, with a dowel-pin, z, entering the opposite side of the box, as shown in Fig. 4; or the fastening device may consist of simple pins s s, passing through both the opposite sides of the box, and into the piece a of the cover B, asshown in Fig. 4.
When the box is to be used as a packingbox, it is intended that either of the fastening devices selected to be employed is to be out of engagement with the body of the box, that the cover may be readily removed; but after the concealed fastenings of the cover may be operated by an instrument through an opening made specially for that purpose in any selected side, or in the bottom, and be of smaller size, and other form than that shown, that will permit an instrument to operate with said fastenings; and it is also apparent that it is not absolutely necessary that the slot c should be located in the cover, as it may be located in one ofthe sides or bottom, and secure the same results by adapting the packing-box, When emptied of its collars or other merchantable articles,'to serve the purpose of a toy savings-bank, and that the abovementioned modifications Would require only the exercise of mechanical skill and workmanship, and not inventive ingenuity.
It may be readily seen that other simple and inexpensive devices for securing in aconcealed manner the cover to the box may be employed Without departing from the spirit of this invention. It may also be readily seen that by these improvements a substantial and strong box may be produced which may be employed to serve useful purposes in a household Where there are children, after the box has served all the purposes of an original packing-box.
Having described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. The combination, with the body A of a packing-box, of the cover B, provided with concealed fastenings adapted to secure said cover in place, and an opening, c, adapted to admit an instrument to said fasteuings, inthe manner and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the body A of a packing-box, and a cover secured to said body lby concealed fastenings, of the slot c, adapted to admit the passage of coin, and all operating, when desired, to convert the box into a toy savings-bank, as andffor the purpose set forth.
