CONNECTION FOR DooRcHEcKs Filed April 2, 195o Patented Jan. 31, 1933 UNITED STATE-s PATENT fo'FFIcEf,
LEWIS o. NORTON, OF Los ANGELES,` CALIFORNIA, AssIGNoR 'ro NORTON-LASI'ER. Oo., n or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A ooRroRATIoN or ILLINOIS I CONNECTION For; Doonormoxs Application filed Apri1`2, 1930. Serial No. 440,904,
The invention relates to' `connecting arms for door checks and has particular reference toa type of arm for connecting door checks with a single or double .acting door.
5 The invention contemplates a form of door vconnecting arm especially designed for ready and convenient attachment to means previously secured to the door and to a conventional form of door closing and checking device. Connecting arms are adapted to be secured at theirrpivot end tothe central operating shaftof the closing mechanism and adapt- -ed forassociation at their other end with the door., `so that the opening and closing movements of the door will be transmitted to the operating shaft in the formfof rotary motion. In the construction vof, ,buildings where doors areequipped with closing and checking means, it is customary to install the closing mechanism in the door sill, prior to the installation of the door. It is often found .-upon connection being made between the door and the device that eiiicient actuation and operation of the parts is impossible due to the improper aligning of thedoor check in the sill :and also partly dueto inaccurate securement of the other parts to the door. To this end one of the objects of the present Vinvention is to provide a door connecting arm which will allow for slight inaccuracy in installation of the l,checking andr closing mechanism in addition to allowing the door to be subsequently'installed and readily connected to such mechanism.
A further obj ect is to provide a connecting varm of the type described, which will have a novel form of .guiding or track'means for associating the arm with the door, the means 40 lbeingprovided with a limitedrange of ad- )ustment in relation to the sides of the door. This adjustable feature is especially advantageous when the arm is applied to double acting doors, as it allows sufficient adjustment 445 of the connection so that, when the checking .end construction, which willallow for ready movement Yupon the .ball memberl attached to fit Yin directions to .compensate for inaccurate and closing device assumes a .neutral position, l
the door will be alined with :the sill.
A yet further object is to provide yan" arm of the type described with a novel form of Y .L attachment of the arm ,to the door yafter the latter has been completely installed.. The `end construction `being in .the form of a socket member alsoallows rthe arm to havefree installation ofthe closing'mechanism.
A yet further Objectis to provide a` device ofthe character described which will 'be simple in construction, cheap to manufacture and 4eliicient and positive yin operation.
With these and various other Objects .in view, the invention may consist of certain novel features of construction and operation, as will be more fully described and parti'cularly pointed out in the specification, drawing and claim appended hereto.
4 In the drawing, which illustrates an einbodiment Iof the device and wherein 'like reference characters are used to designate like parts-. t
Figurel is a fragmentary front lelevation of a door equipped with the closing mechanism and employing .the present invention. Figure 2' is a sectionalvi'ew taken alo-ng line Q-Zof Figure 1, :and looking in the'direction ofthe arrows. .f t Y Y Figure 3 is an end lelevation of the device as shown in Figure 2.and'lookingtowards the right. i i
l Figure 4 is a perspectiveiview showing the end lof the arm provided with socket attach- .ing means.
.that the present invention is adapted to .be
associated with :a conventional vtype of door .closing and checking mechanism 10, havingy 'the' connecting arm -of l ilo ak depending central shaft 11. The closing mechanism is of the type employing spring means for imparting closing movements to the door and Valso employing aviiuid dashfpot The connecting Yarm 12 is adapted to beY fixedly secured at its kpivot end to the depend- 27 Y may comprlse a plurality of screws wherein l at Y and also may be the arm maybe fixedly secured to the` shaft vided with a socket portion. YA longitudinallyY extending slot l13 is formed in this end terminating at aipoint 14. Thisv slot divides 'the end portion of the arm into a plurality ofv finger portions, which portions are curved ,at their extremities into socket forming members `15 and 16 respectively. Thelinnersurfaces 18 and 19 of thesocket forming members are slightly dished so' that the portions 15 and 16 form a ball engaging means. For adjusting the width between the members 15 and 16 an adjustable screw'20'is provided,
having a nut 30 `iiXedly secured thereon and "located in the slot 13. The threaded end 31 ofthe screw20 is threadedv into the portion 15 while the op-posite end is rotatable in open-v ing 32 in portion .16.' It is thus seen that by applying a wrench Vto thehe'ad ofscrew 20 and rotating the same in one direction' that ,the portions will be spread apart, whereas rotation in the opposite Vdirection will serve to draw the portions'together. In this manner adjustment of the ball engaging V`portions can be secured without removing thearm 12 from shaft 11.
A' sliding block 21 is provided adapted to Y havesliding engagement within a slide guide Y 22I located in the recess 23 in the door.v In p forming this recess in the door :i't is necessary to vcut a portion of the door away when the device is adapted to be attached to double act# Ying doors. However, with single acting' doors Vitis only necessary that the recessbevpro vided in one side. The' slidev guide 22 locatedin this recess ispivotally securedat one end'by 'a screw 241 and is 'adj ustably supported Y' in position at the 'other end by la series vof threaded members 25. For this adjustable feature it is necessary that the recess be made of such a shape, wherein the end of the recess at24 is made substantially narrower than the l end atwhich the screws 25 are located. 4 This i allows, by adjustment of the. screws 25, the
guide 22 to be located at any point in the reing-portion'of shaft 11. The, securing means detached therefrom when desired. The other end of the arm is secured to means on the door 'and for this purpose is process which may be desired for proper functioning ofthe connecting arm. Y
The sliding block 21 is adapted to have slidable engagement within'the slide guide 22 and for purposes of having the arm'12 deta'chably secured to it, is provided with a stem 26 terminating in a ball portion 27. The ball portion 27 is made of a size substantially equal in diameter to the socketportion formedl by the socket members 15 and 16, sothat upon adjustment of the screw 2O this socket portion can be readily connected so as vto have proper interengaging relationwith the ball 'i 'The insaimion f the 'Checking 'amnanism is generallyA completed long before the door is hinged -in place. Before hinging the door in place however,`it is desirable .whenV equipping the same with the mechanism of the present inventionl to provide the recessV 23 therein and adjustably secure inplac'e the slide guide 22. The door can then b'ehing'ed y inplace and the connecting varm 142 readily secured to the parts by reason of thedetach'- u l v able construction comprising'thefsocket en-y gag'ing members 15 and16. Itis only 'necessary to spread the members and fit therein" vthe ball portion 27`of the sliding block 21.
Rotation of the screw- 2O in the properdirection serves'to close the members tocause `them to engage the surfaces of the-ball 27.
It is therefore seen that byv thenovel form of connecting arm ofthe presentminvention `the installations of the checking and closing mechanism' and the door can be completed-be?" 100 fore it is necessary to connect'the' operative parts of the mechanism'withthe door. By reason of the socket forming members on ythe end of the arm 12, ready connectiondand 'disconnectioncan be made'between the p arts whenever desired. This ball'andsocket con-A nection between' the arm 12 and the sliding block 21 also allows for inaccurate installa? tions of the ,closing mechani'smll 'as V--the arm 12" may have free movementupon the .Y
`ball portion *27, without causing' ar twisting or distortion of the .remaining operative `rarts.
is such that relative movement between the slide and door can be had sov as tolocate the slide in properY position in relation toA the checking installation. In those instances where the latter installation is off line the ad- ;justment'of theposition of the slide guided functions to allow accurate location ,ofl the door with the sill.
A device shown, which is merely by way Vof illusltration and not limitation, as various and apparent to those skilled vin theart without departing from :the spiritiof the' invention or the scope of the claim.
Also the construction of the slide guide 22 Y y n is te@ be understood that I ,do notwsh of Y be limited bythe lexact, embodiment of the n 'i Y other forms `ofthe device will of coursebeV I cla-im:
In combination with a door closing and checking device having a shaft, an arm secured to the shaft, the other end of the arm being provided with a socket portion, a slide guide mounted in a recess in said door, means for adj ustably locating said guide Within the recess, a block adapted to slide Within the guide, and means on the block for association With the socket portion of said arm.
Signed at Los Angeles, California, this 25 day of March, 1930.
