This invention relates to door operating mechanism, and more particularly to a mechanism for operating double doors.
A main object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved mechanism for operating double doors, said mechanism being very simple in structure, easy to install and reliable in operation.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved double door operating mechanism which is inexpensive to manufacture, easilyadjusted and sturdy in construction.v
Further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description and claims, and from the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a top plan view, partly in cross-section, of a door operating mechanism according to the present invention, shown installed on a pair of doors, the doors being shown in closed positions.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the structure of Figure 1 with the doors shown in open positions.
Figure 3 is an enlarged longitudinal crosssectional view taken through the length adjusting means for the tie rod employed in the door operating structure of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is an enlarged detail elevational view, partly in cross-section, of the upper corner portion of one of the doors of Figure 1, showing the adjusting means for the connection of the tie rod member thereto.
Figure 5 is an enlarged perspective detail view of a channel member and adjusting shaft employed in the connection adjusting means of Figure 4.
Figure 6 is an enlarged perspective detail view of a bearing block employed with the adjusting shaft of Figure 5.
Referring to the drawings, II and I2 designate a pair of double doors hinged at their front sides, as indicated at I3 and I4 to the door posts l 5 and I6, respectively. Secured to the top of door I2 is a bar member I 'I having a rearwardly and laterally outwardly inclined lever arm I8 which extends toward the rear side of the door post I6. Pivotally connected to lever arm I8 is a tie rod section I 9 having right-hand threads 20 on its opposite end portion. Engaging threads is a sleeve member 2| having right-'hand internal threads 22 on one side and left-hand internal threads 23 on the other side of its inner surface.
The right-hand threads 22 threadedly engage the threads 20 of the tie rod section I9 and the left-hand threads 23 threadedly engage left-hand threads 24 formed on the end portion of a second tie rod section 25. Sleeve 2I is centrally apertured at 26 to receive a capstan bar for rotating the sleeve to adjust the endwise distance between the tie rod sections I9 and 25.
2 Claims. (Cl. 268-62) The top of door I I is formed with a rectangular recess 2'I in which is slidably positioned a channel-shaped member 28, whose top flange is substantially flush with the top edge of door II. Said top flange is apertured at 30 and pivotally secured to said top flange, by a bolt 3l passing through the aperture 3U is the angularly bent end portion 32 of tie rod section 25. Secured to the web of channel member 28 is an internally threaded sleeve 33 in which is threadedly engaged a threaded shaft 34 having reduced end portions 35 and 36. End portion 35 is rotatably supported in a bearing block 3l secured in a recess provided therefor in door II and end portion 36 is likewise rotatably supported in a similar bearing block in door II.
The end of shaft portion 36 is exposed substantially flushwith the laterally outward side edge of door II and is formed with a slot 38 for engagement by a screw driver. Each of the bearing blocks 3'I is provided with a set screw 39 adapted to lockingly engage the shaft end portions 35 and 36 to lock the shaft 34 in an adjusted position.
When door I2 is swung forwardly from a closed position, such as is shown in Figure 1, to an open position, as shown in Figure 2, the tie rod, comprising the sections I9 and 25 connected by sleeve 2l, transmits a moment of force irom lever arm IS to channel member 28 which is effective to swing door II to open position simultaneously with door I2. The applied moment may be varied with respect to door II by adjusting the position of channel member 28 longitudinally in recess 2'! using the adjusting means above described. The length of the tie rod may be varied in accordance with the position of channel member 28 by rotating sleeve 2l either to lengthen or shorten the main link as required by the adjustment of the position of channel member 28.
While a specic embodimentl of a double door operating mechanism has been disclosed in the foregoing description, it will be understood that various modications within the spirit of the invention may occur to those skilled in the art. rliherefore, it is intended that no limitations be placed on the invention other than as dened by the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
l. In double door operating mechanism, a bracket adapted to be secured to one of the doors comprising a pair of longitudinally spaced bearing blocks adapted to be Xed on the door, a threaded rotary shaft extending between and having end portions journalledin said bearing blocks, means acting between said shaft and said bearing blocks to preclude endwise movement of said shaft relative to the bearing blocks, an internally threaded sleeve threaded on said shaft,
said sleeve being shorter than the distance be tween said bearing blocks and arranged to travel endwise between the ,bearing blocks, as the shaft is turned'in opposite directions, means for rotating said shaft in opposite directions, and a member xed to said sleeve and extending longitudinally along said sleeve, salidrnember being shorter than the distance between'said bearing blocks, a portion of the member being arranged to bear against a portion of the door whereby rotation of the member andthev sleeve relative to said threaded shaft is precluded, and a tie rod having one end thereof pivoted to said member and having another eind adapted to be pivoted` to the other door, saidtie rod lbeing otherwise unconnected to thel double doors.`
