Abstract

244,334. Sibley, E. J. May 6, 1925. Stays.-A telescopic casement stay comprises a tube and a plunger therein, friction means interposed between these parts, and means for adjusting the friction to a predetermined minimum degree by rotation of the tube. As shown, the friction means consists of semi-circular shoes 16, 17 between which is a flat spring 18, one of the shoes 17 being screw-threaded at 22 for engagement with the screwed end of a plunger-rod 12. The member 16 supports one end of the spring 18 and has a non-threaded recess 21 for receiving the end of the plunger 12. The friction of the shoes is adjusted by rotation of the tube 1, one end of which is rotatably mounted at 2 on a short arm 3 pivoted at 4 to a bracket 5 secured by a screw 7 to the window sill. The longitudinal adjustment of the member 17 caused by rotation of the tube is limited in one direction by a lug 41 abutting the end 33 of the recess 19, and in the other direction by the end of the screwed thread 22 contacting with the end of the screw 15. The friction of the device is adjustable between the limits of maximum and minimum flexing of the, spring 18, as affected by the position of the lug 41 on the shoe 17. The arrangement of the relatively movable friction shoes and intermediate spring is also described as applied to a telescopic stay in which the adjustment of the friction shoes against the tube is required to be effected before assembling the parts on the window and its frame.
