In practicing the invention, I prefer to employ a receptacle'of glass and make a cover of metal, preferably:sheetmetal. The cover .is .preferably constructed in two pieces,

namely, a body section and amovable lid or cover section attached to the body section of the cover. The body section of the cover is constructed with a marginal flange and is adapted to be latched in place onthe upper edge of the wall of the receptacle to prevent it from being moved :laterally off the receptacle. The wall of the receptacle and the flange of the body section'are providedwith interlocking means to latch'the body section of the cover in place.

The interlocking means carried by the body section ofthe cover is preferably resilient and cooperates with the receptacle Wall sothat'when desired the cover can readily be slid off of the 'receptacle.

Referring more particularly tolthe parts, 1 indicates a receptacle preferably made of glass or other material which can readily be sterilized by heat or other means, and this receptacle ispreferably of box form comprising side walls 2 and'end walls such as the end wall 3 (see Figure '1). On the side flanges 7 I provide locking means preferably in the form of dogs which project inwardly and are received in sockets 9 formed in the outer face of the walls 2 near their upper edge, and these dogs are preferably in the form of pins 10 having rounded heads disposed on the inside of the flange.

I prefer to provide resilient means for urging these dogs or pins inwardly so as to snap them into the sockets 9 after the body section .4 has been slid into place. For this purpose I provide either a spring corresponding to each pin or a double spring 11 which is in the form of a bar secured by a rivet 12 to the middle portion of the end flange 8, and this spring has side arms 13 which extend along the inner sides of the side flanges 7 and engage under the heads of the pins 10 so as to urge them inwardly. In order to increase the spring efl'ect, these side arms 13 of the spring may each be provided with a bend or small spring how 14 (see Figure 1).

In order to guide the heads of the pins 10 into the sockets 9, I prefer to provide each side wall near its upper edge with a guide groove 15. The sockets 9 are slightly deeper than the grooves 15 so as to form a rudimentary shoulder 16 to enable the sockets to yieldingly retain the pins.

The end wall 3 of the receptacle and the end flange 8 of the body section are also preferably provided with interlocking means to prevent this edge of the body section 4 from being raised from the adjacent end wall 3. For this purpose I provide a socket 17 in the outer face of the end wall that receives the inner head of the pin or rivet 12.

I prefer to utilize the pins 10 as pivots for attaching the movable cover section 5. For this purpose, the cover section is provided with a flange 18 which is formed with integral extensions or ears 19 which have perforations to receive the pins. 2

ings 18 into which the pins pass and these openings are preferably elongated in a horizontal direction. This is important because it prevents any strains being developed in the glass which might break the same when the article is subjected to changes in temperature. The end of each flange 18 of the cover section 5 is provided with an opening or eye 20 which fits closely to the side of the pin 10 so as to operate as an eflicient hinge joint.

In. Figure 6 I illustrate another embodiment of the invention in which the body section 21 of the cover may be applied by snapping it down into place instead of sliding it into place as in the other embodiment of the invention already described. In this embodiment shown in Figure 6, the construction of the cover section 21 is the same as before, but instead of having a guide groove at each side of the receptacle 22, I provide a socket 23 similar to the socket 17 (see Figure 1) to receive a projection or pin 24 similar to the rivet 12. Each side of the receptacle is provided with a socket 25 extending down from the upper edge 26 of the wall and provided with a rounded horizontal shoulder 27. The cover should be applied as indicated in Figure 6 so that the pin 24 engages the socket 23, and then the cover section is swung downwardly so that the heads of the pins 28 will pass into the sockets 25.

In this way, they snap under'the shoulders 27 through the agency of their springs 29 which correspond to the springs 13.

When it is desired to sterilize the cover, it may be removed from the receptacle and then the two sections disengaged by shoving the

10 or 28 outwardly.

It is understood that the embodiment of the invention described herein is only one of the many embodiments this invention may take, and I do not wish to be limited in the practice of the invention, nor in the claims, to the particular embodiment set forth.

What I claim is:

1. In a covered receptacle, the combination of a receptacle body'of substantially rectangular form having an upper opening with a wall extending around the said opening, a cover having a body section capable of being placed over the edge of the wall at I one side of the receptacle so as to cover a part of the said opening toward one end of the receptacle, cooperating means on two op posite walls and the said body section for latching the body section against being moved I;

laterally off the receptacle, and cooperating means on a transverse wall and the body section for latching the same against being raised off the wall, and a movable cover section carried by the body section of said cover, for

covering the remainder of the opening.

2. In a covered receptacle, the combina tion pf a receptacle body having an upper opening with two parallel side walls and two transverse end walls extending around the said opening, a cover having a body section capable of being placed over the edge of the wall at one side of the receptacle so as to cover a part of the said opening, said body section having a marginal flange with yield- 1 ing means movably mounted on the flange and projecting inwardly at two opposite points on the flange, and said side walls having means on their outer faces to cooperate with said last named means to latch the body 1 section against lateral movement along the side walls, and means for interlocking the transverse portion of the flange with the adjacent transverse wall of the receptacle body.

3. In a covered receptacle, the combination of a receptacle body having an upper opening with a wall extending around the said opening, a cover having a body section capable of being slid laterally over the edge of the wall at one side of the receptacle so as to cover a part of the said opening, said body section having amarginal flange with means projecting inwardly, said wall having means on its outer face to cooperate with said last named means to latch the body section against lateral movement ofl? of the receptacle body, and a movable cover section carried by the body section of said cover.

4. In a covered receptacle, the combination of a receptacle body having an upper opening with a wall extending around the said opening, a cover having a body section capable of being slid laterally over the edge of the wall at one side of the receptacle so as to cover a part of the said opening, said body section having a marginal flange including side extensions lying substantially parallel with the direction in WAlCl'l the body section is slid when applyingthe same to the receptacle, dogs carried respectively on said flange extensions, said wall having oppositely dis posed sockets receiving said dogs for latching the body section to the receptacle, and a movable cover section carried by the body section.

5. In a covered receptacle, the combination of a receptacle body having an upper opening with a wall extending around the said opening, a cover having a body section capable of being slid laterally over the edge of the wall at one side or" the receptacle so as to cover a part of the said opening, said body section having a mar inal flange including side extensions lying substantially parallel with the direction in which the body section is slid when applying the same to the receptacle, dogs in the form of pins carried respectively of the flange extensions, said wall having sockets receiving said pins for latching the body section to the receptacle,

and a movable cover section pivotally mounted on said pins.

6. In a covered receptacle, the combination of a receptacle body having an upper pening with a wall extending around the said opening, a cover having a body section eapable of being slid laterally over the edge of the wall at one side of the receptacle so as to cover a part of the said opening, said body section having a marginal flange including side extensions lying substantially parallel with the direction in which the body section is slid when applying the same to the receptacle, dogs carried respectively on said flange extensions, said wall having oppositely disposed sockets receiving said dogs for latching the body section to the receptacle, a movable cover section carried by the body section, and means associated with the dogs for resiliently pressing: the same into the sockets.

7. In a covered receptacle, the combination or" a receptacle body having an upper open ing with a wall extending around the said opening, a cover having a body section capable of being slid laterally over the edge of the wall at one side of the receptacle so as to cover a part of the said opening, said body section having a marginal flange'includinn: side extensions lying substantially parallel with the direction in which the body section is slid when applying the same to the receptacle, and including a transverse exten sion, dogs carried on the side extensions and projecting toward the wall and means on the wall for cooperating with the dogs to latch the body section to the same.

8. In a covered receptacle, the combination of a receptacle body having an upper opening" with a wall extending around. the said opening, a cover having a body section capable of being slid laterally over the edge of the wall at one side of the receptacle soas to cover a part of the said opening, said body section having a marginal flange including side extensions lying substantially parallel with the direction in which the body section is slid when applying the same to the receptacle, and including an end extension, adog carried by each side extension of the flange, a spring mounted on the flange with means for urging the dogs inwardly toward the wall, said wall having sockets toreceive the said dogs, and cooperating with the same. to latch the body section to the receptacle.

9.. In a covered receptacle, the combination of a receptacle body having an upper opening with a wall. extending around the said opening,, a cover having a body section capable of being slid laterally over the edge of the Wall atone side of the receptacle so as to cover a part of the said opening, said body section having a marginal flange includingv side extensions lying substantially parallel with the direction in which the body section is slid when applying the same to the receptacle, and including an end extension, a dog carried by each side extension of the flange, a spring mounted on the flange with means for urging the dogs inwardly toward the wall, said wall havingsocketsto receive the said dogs, and cooperating with the same to latch the body section to the receptacle, said wall further having guide-grooveson its outer face for guiding the-dogsinto'the sockets when the body section is slid intoposition.

10. In a covered receptacle, the combinaion of a receptacle body having an upper opening. with a wall extending around the said opening, a cover having aabodysection capable ofbeingslid-laterally over theedge of the wall at one-side of the receptacle so as-to cover a part of the said opening, said body section having a marginal flange including" side extensions lying substantially parallel with the direction in which the body section is slid when applying the same to the receptacle and including an end extension, a spring attached to said end extension of the flange said opening, a cover having a body section capable oi. being slid laterally over the edge of the wall at one-side of the receptacle so as to cover a part of the said opening, said body section having a marginal flange including side extensions lying substantially parallel with the direction in which the body section is slid when applying the same to the receptacle and including an end extension, a spring attached to said end extension of the flange and having arins extending along the side extensions of the flange, a dog associated with each side extension and urged inwardly by its corresponding spring arni, said wall having sockets to receive the said dogs and cooperating with the same to latch the body section to the receptacle, the end wall of said receptacle having a socket therein, and said end flange having means for engaging the same to lockdown the end portion of the body section.

12. In a covered receptacle, the combination of a receptacle body having an upper opening with a wall extending around the said opening, a cover having a body section capable of being slid laterally over the edge of the wall at one side of the receptacle so as to cover a' part of the said opening, said body section having a marginal flange including side extensions lying substantially parallel with the direction in which the body section is slid when applying the same to the receptacle, and including an end extension, a spring on the inner side of the end extension of the flange, a pin on the end extension securing the spring to the same and projecting at its inner side toward the end wall of the re ceptacle. said spring having side arms extending along the inner sides of the side extensions of the flange, a latching pin mounted at each side flange and urged inwardly toward the wall by the corresponding spring arin, said wall having oppositely disposed sockets receiving the side pins and having a socket re- 3 ceiving the first named pin, and cooperating to latch the body section to the receptacle.

13. In a covered receptacle, the combination of a receptacle body having an upper opening with a wall'extending around the said opening, two opposite side walls of said receptacle adjacent the opening having sockets formed respectively in the same, and one of the transverse walls of the receptacle having a socket formed therein'adjacent its upper edge, and a cover section having a flange with means for interlocking with the last named socket and having means for yieldingly engaging in the said first named sockets.
