Description

NOV. 8, 1932. H F LNERMORE 1,886,563
LUG STRAP FOR LOOMS Filed May l2, 1931 Patented Nov. 8, 1932 HOMER F. LIVERMORE, OF BROOKLINE, MASSCHUSETTS, SSIGNOR-TO GUARANTEED PARTS, INC., OF ALLSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, A*ICOR-.PGRATION OF MASSACHUSETTS LUG STRAP Application filed May 12,'
This invention relates to an improvement in lug straps for looms.
The object of the invention is to provide a lug strap of novel construction embodying therein a pair of side bars between which is located an adjustable striker member, the latter being preferably cylindrical in form and being so secured to the side bars that it may be rotated therebetween in order that dierent portions of is periphery may contact with a picker stick or be engaged by a pick arm as said periphery becomes worn, the rcsult being that the life of the lug strap is greatly prolonged.
Another object of the invention is to pro-Yv vide an improved holdup member by meansof which the lug strap is connected to an intermediate portion of the picker stick.
The invention consists in an improved lug strap for looms as set forth in the following speciication and particularly as pointed out in the claims thereof.
Referring to the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of an intermediate portion of a picker stick, an end portion of a sweep stick, and a lug strap and" hold-up member therefor embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view taken on the "1 line 2--2, Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional elevation taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a detail transverse section taken on the line lr-4: of Fig. 1.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawing.
In the drawing, 5 represents an intermediate portion of a picker stick of well-known form, 6 an end portion of a sweep stick also of well-known form, and 7 is a lug strap which is secured by means of a bolt 8 to the sweep stick, and is connected, in a manner hereinafter to be described, to the picker stick.
The lug strap 7 embodies therein a pair of side bars 9 which may be either rigid or flexible. When rigid they may be made of a light strong metal. When flexible they may be made of leather, or layers of fabric secured together by a suitable adhesive. The
son" Looms 1931. Serial No. '536,753'.
side bars 9. are located upon opposite sides of l the picker stick 5 and their outer'end -portions are secured together by means of a bolt 10 which entends throughV a cylindrical sleeve 11 which also functions as a spacing member to space the outer end portions of the bars 9 a predetermined distance apart.
Rotatably mounted upon the sleeve 11 `between the side bars 9 is a striker 12 also cylindrical in form, and this striker.is'clampedV between the bars 9 by means of the bolt 10. rlhe strikerv may-be constructed `of leather, rubber, fabric,-or anyother toughvmaterial capable of withstanding 'excessive wear, and
the periphery thereof is adaptedl to contact.r
with an :edge of the picker stick. Asf'the periphery of the striker 12l becomes-worn from continual contact with the edge ofthe picker stick, the striker may be rotatedupon the sleeve 11 between the bars Sand an un-A lworn portion of its periphery moves into poy sition to engage the picker stick, the bolt 10 being first loosened to permit the striker 12 to be'rotated, and then tightenedl in order that said striker will beclamped between the 1 bars 9. Y f
The lug strap. 7 is supported'at a proper position upon the picker stick 5 bymeans of a plate 13 -which constitutes a hold-up inember, said plate being providedwith oppo-4 sitely-disposed notches 11i in which thebars 9 are located.: The plate 13 isclam-ped to an edge of the picker stick 5 by meansiof 'a yoke 15 which encirclesthe picker stick and which is secured to the latter by means of a set screw 16. In adjusting the plate 13 upon the picker stick 5 all that is necessary is to loosen the set screw 16 a sufcient amount to permit the plate to slide upon the picker stick beneath the yoke 15, after which said yoke is tight-f ened against the plate by again tightening the screw 16.
In the operation of the loom, when the striker 12 has become worn to such an extent that the proper operation ofthe picker stick is -1 engage the picker stick and the striker is thenclamped in this position by tightening the bolt l0.
While I have illustrated the lug strap of this invention as being attached at one end only of a sweep stick for the purpose of end gaging the picker stick and causing the latter to be actuated, in certain types of looms a separate lug strap may be secured at each end v of the sweep stick, one of said lug straps being adapted to engage the picker stick and the other of said lug straps being adapted to be engaged by the pick arm, and it will be understood that in certain of the claims the actuated member mentioned has reference to the picker stick andthe actuating member mentioned refers to the pick arm;
I claim:
l. 'A lug strap of the character described,
having, in combination, a pair of side` bars,
a rigidspacer for said side bars, whereby the latter are positioned a predetermined distance apart, a 'flexible striker member mounted to rotate upon said spacer, and means to clamp the spacer and striker member between the side bars.
2. A lug strap of the character described having, in combination, a pair of side bars,
va non -compressible sleeve interposed between said bars and spacing the latter. a predetermined distance apart, a flexible striker member rotatably mounted upon said sleeve, and a bolt vextending through the side bars and sleeve and clamping the sleeve and striker between the side bars. Y
3. In combination, a sweep stick, a pair of side bars attached at one end thereof to said sweep stick, a sleeve interposed between said bars at the other end thereof and spacing the bars apredetermined distance apart, a picker stick located between said side bars, a hold-up plate fast to said picker stick and engaging saidside bars, astriker rotatably mounted upon said sleeve and means to clamp said sleeve and striker between the bars whereby .diferent portions of the periphery of the striker may be presented to the picker stick. In testimonywhereof I have hereunto set my hand.
