' E. H. DOE. YMeans for Securing Pickers to'the `Picker `Sticks of Looms.
vNm 240,897.V V'PaxtenteclMay 3,1881.
` UNITED ASTATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDMUND H. DOE, OF AUGUSTA, MAINE.
MEANS FOR SECUR|NG-PICKERS T THE PICKER-STICKS 0F LOOMS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 240,897, dated May 3, 1881. Application filed November 13, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDMUND H. DOE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Augusta, in the county of Kennebec and State ot' Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Securing Pickers to the Picker-Sticks of' Looms; and I do hereby declare the following to ube a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will en able others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or gures ot'ref'erence marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a device for securin g and adjusting' a picker upon the picker-stick of a loom; and it consistsin combining a wedge having notches for the engagement of a loopbinder with a picker, a picker-stick, and a loopbinder, to `hold thepicker, as herein described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is aview ofthe frontor strikin g side of the picker. Fig. 2 is a side view of the upper end of a pickerstick. showing my invention applied thereto. Fig. 3 is a view of the rear side ot' the stick. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the wedge, and
'Figa 5 is a `view of the binder or clasp.
The letterA designates the upper end of the picker-stick,one side of which I bevel or taper oft gradually, as shown at a, Fig. 2.
B is the picker, against which the shuttle strikes. It is made of leather or other suitable material, and is designed to rest against the side of the stick opposite that which is beveled or tapered.
O is the binder or clasp which confines the picker to its position on the stick. It consists of a metallic loopband, bent somewhat U shape, as seen in Fig. 5, and having its ends connected by apin, d. This loop-binder passes around the stick and picker when the latter is in position.
The wedge E consists, preferably, of two independent side walls, ff, connected by a plate,
g, which rests against the picker-stick, and the sloping edge of cach wall is provided with notches h, similar to saw-teeth.
It will be seen that when the picker is placed against the straight side of the stick, with the wedge E on the tapered or beveled side opposite, the pin d of the binder extends across the two walls of the wedge and engages with a notch in each wall. The adjustment ot' the pin upon the notched wedge is effected by slipping the picker, wed ge, and clasp up to near the end of the stick. Then the picker, clasp, and wedge are i'orced down on the stick and are tightened b v the bevel a on the latter. A portion of the projecting plate g of the wedge has a hole, n, through which a screw may be entered into the stick to secure the wedge from slippingthereon.
My improved notched wedge is adapted for pickers of various thickness, and, used in connection with apicker-stiek havingone side beveled or tapered, is an efficient device, easily adjustedand will not work loose. It is not affected by the jar of the machinery, as are devices which employ a set-screw as a means ot' tightening.
Having described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patentof the United States- The combination of a picker, a picker-stick, and a loop-binder, to contine the picker to the stick, with a wedge having notches with which the loop-hinderen gages, substan tiallyas shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence ot' two witnesses.
`EDll/IUND H. DOE.
