WILLIAM WAEITIE, 0F WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO CROMPTON 86 KNOWLES LOOIVI WORKS, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS IICKER FOR LOOMS.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 13 1911,, Application filed October 24, 1907.
Serial No. 399,055.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM VVATTIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of i'tlassachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pickers for Looms, of which the .t'ollowing is.a specification.
My invention relates to a picker combined with a. picker stick used in looms, for picking or throwing the shuttle across the lay, and my invention particularly relates to pickers used on heavy looms, where the picking or throwing of the shuttle requires more power, and the wear and tear of the picker is very great.
The picker as ordinarily made, consists of a number of leather strips compressed and riveted together, with an opening for the picker stick to pass through. Either end of the picker may be used for engaging and throwing the shuttle. The engagement of the shuttle with the end of the picker causes the end of the picker to be dented or depressed by the point of the shuttle, and to be Worn, so that the picker soon becomes of no value. I
The object of my invention is to provide a picker, preferably a double end picker, of improved construction which will not be injured by the shuttle and will last longer.
In my improvements I combine with the double end picker, a piece or plug oi hard wood, or other suitable non-yielding material preferably of cylindrical shape, which is driven into a hole through the picker, at
each end thereof, where the picker engages the shuttle.
My invention consists in certain novel features of construction of my improve ments in a picker, as will be hereinafter fully described.
Referring to the drawing:-Figure 1 is a front ,view of a picker embodying my improvements, looking in the direction of arrow a, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a top view of the picker shown in Fig. 1, looking in the direction of arrow 6, same figure. A portion of the picker at theright hand end is partially broken away, and, Fig. 3 is a section, on line 3, 3, Fig. 1, looking in the direction of arrow 0, same figure.
In the accompanying drawing, 1 is a double end picker made of a number of strips of leather, or other suitable material,
l opening is driven a piece or or other hard or non -yielding material,
which are compressed and at each end, in this instance by two pairs of. rivets 2, having the head 2 on one end and washers 3 on their other end. An openi i; is made through the leather strip t3 loosely receive the picker stick not show The opposite sides of said opening are preferably of curved shape, as shown in Fig. 1.
l.hrough each end of the picker a transverse opening or hole is made, and into each plug 5, of wood,
prelim-ably o't' cylindrical shape. The plugs 5 Wlll be held in position by the elasticity of the leather of which the picker is made.
In using the picker of m improved construction, the contact of tie point of the shuttle with the end of the picker, will form a recess or depression in the leather at the ends of the picker, and this depression will in time extend to the wooden plug 5 as shown by dotted lines 1, Fig. 1. H10 wooden plug 5 being harder than the leather will resist the point of the shuttle, and when in time the wooden plug becomes worn, it can be easily replaced by a new plug, and the leather portion of the picker will not be damaged.
The advantages of my improvements will be readily appreciated by those skilled in the art.
A picker of ordinary construction can readily be provided with my improvements, and a picker having my improvements will last much longer than the ordinary picker and give more satisfactory results.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An improved article of manufacture,
' a double. end picker for a loom, comprisin strips of leather or other suitable materia having an opening thcrethrough to loosely receive the icker stick, two pair of rivets at each on to secure the strips together, said strips also having an opening there through, near each end, extending in a plane at right angles to the plane of the first mentioned opening, a piece of wood or other non-yielding material extending through the opening at each end, and inclosed by said strips on the engaging end of the picker.
2. An improved article of manufacture, a double end picker for a loom, comprising riveted together strips of leather or other suitable material, other non-yielding material of cylindrical having an opening therethrough to loosely shape, extending through the 'opening at 10 receive the picker stick, two pairs of rivets each. end, and inclosed by said strips on the at each end to secure the strips together, engaging end of the picker. said strips having a circular opening there- WILLIAM WATTIE. through, near each end, extending in a Witnesses:
