Description

1. L. LANDIS. BRUSHHANDLEL] No. 18s-,399. 2mm-11 Jan. 16; 18H.
,WITNESSES' I ATTORNEVYS,
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGE.
ISRAELL. LANDIS, 0E PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPRQVEM ENT IN BRUSH-HANDLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 186,399, dated January 16, 1877; application led October 11, 1876.
To all lwhom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, ISRAEL L. LANDIS, of
`Philadelphia, in the county ot' Philadelphia, and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invent- ,ed certain new and useful Improvements in Brush-Holders; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', reference4 being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of "reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction `and arrangement of an adjustable brush-holder, as will be hereinafter more `fullyset forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to 4which my invention appertains to make "and use the same, I will now proceed` to de Fig. 2 shows the holder detached.
A represents the head and B the `bristles of an ordinary brush ot any suitable construction. In the center of the head-A, from the edge, is made `a hole, a, in which are placed two strips, b b, of leather or other suitable material, the outer ends of said strips being fastened to the outer edge of the head, asshown. I
U is a screw, which may be made tapering or otherwise, as desired, and is screwed into the hole a. against the strips b b, said strips yielding to the threads of the screw and forming the nut in the brush-head. These strips will` accommodate themselves to screws of different thickness, or if the screw should be two small, one or more` additional strips may be inserted, as required.
On the outer end of the screw O is formed a disk, D, with central hole E, and a lug or teat, d, on its inner face.
G represents a socket for the insertion of the brush-handle, said socket being formed at its inner end with a disk, G', in the center of `which is formed a hub, it, having female screw-threads, and on the inner face ot' the disk are a number of recesses or depressions, .fr av, arranged on a circle, having the hub for its center. L is a thumb-screw' 4passed through the central hole E in the disk D, and screwing into the hub h, for fastening the `parts rmly together.
It will readily be seen that this brush-holder is capable of being adjusted to any and every angle and direction desired, as the socket can be turned on thejoint to set it one way and the brush turning on the screw to set i't in the other direction.
the relative position of the 'handle to the brush-head are necessary. The edges ot' the flexible lining do not come closely together 5 hence a space or spaces are left between.
Having thus fully described my invention,
- what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The brush-head A, having opening a; the strips b of leather or similar material, together forming an incomplete annulus; the tapering screw G, having disk D with lug el; the metallic socketGr, with disk G', having depressions w; and the thumb-screw L, all constrncted substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 30th day of September, 1876.
ISRAEL L. LANDIS.
