Description
' UNITED. STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
CHARIIES B. GOLDSMITH, OF HOLYOKE, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BLCKlNG-BRUSHES.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 183,557, dated October 24, 1876; application filed July 17, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES B. GOLD- SMITH, of Holyoke, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Blacking-Brushes 5 and that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part ot' this specification, and to the letters ot' reference marked thereon.
The object of my invention is to provide two small brushes for applying the blacking to the article to be blacked, so that when one becomes worn out another is quickly supplied by reversing that part of the brush provided with the small applying-brushes.
To this end my invention consists of the ordinary large polishing brush, having at one end a small piece mitered thereto, provided with a small applying-brush upon each side, and in a position with the ends of the bristles elevated above the plane of those of the main part of the brush, so that when one of the small applying-brushes becomes worn out the said small piece may be reversed, and the unused brnsh brought into position for use, as will be more fully hereinafter described.
Figure I isa perspective View of my invention, and Fig. II is a longitudinal vertical section of the same.
In the drawings,A represents the stock in which the bristles of the main part of the brush are secured, and to one end of which, at H, is mitered a piece, D, having a small applying-brush, E, made upon each side thereof, land which piece D is iirmly secured to the stock A by a screw, c', inserted through the metallic handle B, which is also secured to the stock A by screws c passing through the handle, and into the stock.
When the brush E which is lirst used becomes worn out, the screw c is removed and the piece- D reversed, bringing the unused brush E into position upon the lower side for use, and is so secured by inserting the screw c again into place. p
It will be perceived that, when arranged for use, the lower plane of the brush E is in a much more elevated position than the lower plane of the main or polishing part of the brush, and is therefore entirely out oi' the way when the polishing is being done; otherwise, the small brush, being wet, Would interi'ere with the work oi' polishing, without the' greatest care.
It is obvious that this invention is equally applicable to boot and shoe brushes as to stove-brushes, without changing, in the least, its reversible feature.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- In combination with the stockv A, the rever- Y CHARLES B. GOLDSMITH.
