SLATE-PENCIL SHARPEN ER.
7 SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 478,374, dated July 5, 1892.
Application filed October 31, 1891.
$erial No. 410,438. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM SHEIVEE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia,State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Slate-Pencil Sharpeners, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanyingdrawings.
My invention consists of a slate pencil sharpener formed in sections with serrated inner faces, a securing-pin, and interlocking lugs or tongues, thus producing asiinple and inexpensive device for the purpose intended.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a slate-pencil sharpener embodying my invention. Fig. Zrepresents a face view of theinterior of the parts or sections comprising the sharpen er. Fig. 3 represents a side elevation of the sharpener, the parts being separated.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the body of the sharpener, the same being formed of matched sections 13 B, having concave faces with serrations or sharpening-teeth O thereon, one end being open, as an inlet, to receive a pencil, which is sharpened bybeing rotated against said serrations.
In order to connect the sections, I pass a pin D through the sections thereof opposite to the inlet and head or hammer the ends of the same, as a rivet, thus firmly securing the sections thereat. In lieu of a rivet I may use a screw as an equivalent fastening. In order to prevent rotation of the sections one on the other, I employ lugs or tongues E, which project from the inner face of one of the sections and enter recesses or grooves F in the oppo- When the sections are placed site section.
grooves and the rivet is fitted in position and secured, by which provision the sections are firmly connected, at single rivet being employed for that purpose and a simple and inexpensive device produced. The serrations of the body, the same forming longitudinal grooves, whereby dust may be readily shaken or knocked out when the sharpener is overturned.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A slate-pencil sharpener formed in sections with sharpening-surfaces on the inner faces thereof, a pin connecting the sections at one end thereof, and a tongue on one of the sections, the opposite section having a groove to receive said tongue, said parts being combined substantially as described.
2. The concave sections having sharpeningsurfaces, a tongue and a groove, and a connecting-pin, the tongue projecting from one section and entering the groove in the other section, thus locking the sections, substantialiy as described. 1
3. A slate-pencil sharpener formed in sections with a tongue and groove on the inner faces thereof, the groove receivingsaid tongue, and a pin which is passed through the sections, whereby the latter are connected and prevented from rotating on each other, substantially as described.
