To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBERT L. ADAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cedar Rapids, in the county of Linn and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Handle-Fastening, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to improvements in handle fastenings, and more especially to a type of fastening for securing a scoop shovel to its handle, one object of the invention, being the provision of means whereby the split socket of the scoop is held in clamping relation upon the handle by such a means as not to weaken the handle as is the case when a single diametrically disposed rivet is employed.

A further object of the present invention, is the provision of a handle of this character which has a tendency to close the split socket in clamping relation upon the handle to thus produce a gripping tension at all times upon the handle and insure the proper correlation between the handle and the split socket.

With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view of a portion of the split socket and a handle showing a modified form of clamping means. Fig. 4: is a section taken on line 414 of Fig. 3.

Referring to the drawings, and more particularly to Figs. 1 and 2 thereof, the numeral 1 designates the shovel handle, and 2 the scoop shovel, said scoop shovel being provided with the usual ferrule or split socket 3, split through its length, as at 7, and provided with the two openings 8 for the reception of-the wire nails 9, said wire nails 9 being driven to assume the position as shown in Fig. 2, crossing at the center point approximately of the handle 1 and having the terminals 10 thereof engaged in the inner portion of the metal socket 3 so as to be turned and thus form a lock for the nails, the heads 11 of the nails being disposed upon the exterior of the member or socket 3 and thus holding the socket 3' firmly upon the handle 1, the action of the nails 9 in driving being driven, having a tendency to close the slot or split 7 and thus clamp the split end of the socket 3 more firmly upon the handle 1.

As the nails 9 are small wire nails, they do not weaken the handle 1 as do the usual form of rivets that are employed for securing the scoop 'tothe handle, such nails 9 being of such a diameter only as to permit of the easy driving of the same and being of a sufficient length to permit the terminals 10 thereof to be turned to form a lock for the nails.

In the construction shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the socket member 3 is split as at 12 similar to the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the upper edge of the socket being provided with the

13 and 14, which are adapted to be crossed or over lapped as illustrated in Fig. 3 so that the

terminals

15 and 16 respectively thereof, may be driven into the body of the handle 1 so as to draw the

overlapping ends

13 and 14 toward each other and thus to a great extent close the. slot 12 and thus clamp the socket member 3 in place upon the handle;

At the same time, the entering prongs 15 and 16 act as a means for locking the socket member 3 against longitudinal movement relatively to the handle.

What is claimed is:

The combination with a handle, of a member having a split handle receiving socket, and crossed means extending from the socket and driven into the handle for drawing the edges of the split socket toward each other and for securing the socket to the handle.
