EXHAUST STEAM INJECTOR Filed may 22, 1950 1 Patented Nov. 10, 1931 JAMES ALAN RAE SMITHJOFLEMEABPLEiENGIJAND EXHAUST STEM imiim'ron,
Application filed May 22,
This invention relates to exhaust steam injectors, that is, to injectors in which part of the operative steam supply is at about atmospheric pressure. With such injectors 5 it is necessary in order to obtain a sufliciently high delivery pressure, to effect delivery into a boilersuch as that of a locomotive to supplement the exhaust steam with a supply of boiler or live steam which is usually intro- 10 duced by means of a nozzle disposed concentrically Within the nozzle through which the exhaust steam enters the injector;
provide an improved construction of exhaust steam injector in which more eflect-ive utilization of the exhaust and live steam supplies is made resulting in the obtaining of a higher delivery pressure than is obtainable with present constructions or in economy of live steam consumption where a higher delivery pressure is not called for. The invention comprises the improved con struction of exhaust steam injector as hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying sheet of explanatory drawings v 1 Figure 1 is a sectional elevationand Figure' 2 a plan view partly in section of. an exhaust steam injector constructed in accord 3 ance with my invention. l'
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure lbut showing a modified construction ofinjector; a indicates the main exhaust steam inlet nozzle, 6 the water inlet space which is regrelatively to'the nozzled. The water inlet branch is shown at e. Exhauststeam also passes by way of the passage f to. the nular'space between the nozzle cl and the further nozzle g.
In accordance with my invention, the live steam which is to supplement the exhaust steam in raising the delivery'pressure of the injector is admitted in the formvof an annular jet around the end of the nozzle g and ulated by moving the nozzle a bymeans of V the crank pin on the end of the spindle 0 v and the live steam inlet.

combining nozzle h mayl'havel aiflap as m or other means iorqprovicling a vffree escape from." the"combining'nozzle'when the injector is starting and before the water jet is established in" the nozzle and a sufficient (lelivery pressure is obtained to effect delivery against the boiler pressure.
By arranging the live steam supply in theform of an annular jet beyond the water, inlet space to the injector instead of through the exhaust steam and water inlet nozzles,
' I find that I obtain a' much more efficient The object of my present invention is to action due to less preliminary heating up of the exhaust steam and water and a more rapid condensation of the live steam which" is in a thin large-diameter annulus. If desired, the second exhaust steam inlet 7 may be omitted, all the exhaust steam entering by the nozzle a. Or more than one an-- ,nular exhaust steaminlet may be employed.
In Figure 3 there is arranged an annular space 0 between the exhaust steam inlet f and the live steam inlet 2' which is closed except for its annular communication with the, mixed water and steam jet within. This closed annular space has been found to improve the efficiency of the injector. Figure 3 can also be taken as illustrating an injector in which two annular exhaust steam inlets are' provided between the water inlet 6 and the live steam inlet 9. In this case, of course,
the space owill receive a supply of exhaust" steam and will not be a closed space as above described; 3 j i What I claim is a a .1. In an exhaust steam injector, in combination, an exhaust steam inlet nozzle, and annular water inlet around the end of said nozzle, an annular live steam inlet around,
the mixed water and exhaust steam j et,a com- .bining nozzle and adelivery nozzlei 2. In an exhaust steam injector as claimed in claim 1, means admitting exhaust steam in annular jet form betweenthe water inlet 3. In an exhaust steam injector as claimed in claim 1, means admitting exhaust steam in annular jet form between thewater inlet and the live steam inlet and means providing anfannular space open only to the mixed 431m" water and exhaust steam jet between said annular exhaust steam inlet and said live steam inlet.
4. In an exhaust steam injector, in combination, an exhaust steam inlet nozzle, an annular water inlet around the end of said nozzle, a further nozzle forming a wall of said annular watenlnlet, an annular exhauststeam lnlet around sald further nozzle, an add1- tional nozzle forming a wall of said annular exhaust steam lnlet, an annular'llve steam" inlet around said additional nozzle, a combining nozzle the inlet end of Whioh forms a Wall of said annular live steam a deliverynozzle.
In testimony whereof- I'have' signed my name to this specification.
JAMES ALAN RAE SMITH.
