a porous element 10 permeable to face powder, or the like, which is adapted to be used for applying the powder, and a non-porouseleinent 11 secured to the element 10 forming av back for the puii1 and attached to the member 10 in a manner to provide a space or pocket 12 for carrying powder. The nonporous element 11 is provided with an integral flap 13 which is provided to form a closure for the filling opening 14 of the space 12.
The porous element 10 forms one side or the front ofV the puff and is adapted to be:
used for applying powder. The element 10 may be formed of any suitable material or fabric and may be of any desired shape. In the form of the invention illustrated the element l() is shown as'being in the form of a round disc. The element 10 is formed of a material that is readily penetrated by a linely divided or comininuted substance such as face powder, and it is preferred to forni the element 10 of a material having a soft napj on one side. The element 10 is arranged so that its soft nap side is outward or on its outer side.
The non-porous element 11 forms the back of the puff and is secured to the element 10; in a manner to provide the space 12 for holding or carrying lthe face powder. The element 11 is impervious to powder, or the like. rThe element 11 may be formed of anysuitable material, it being preferred to form the element 11 of a fabric that is more or less flexible as well as impervious to powder. The outer side or back of the element 11 may be colored or suitably ornamented as desired. The element 11 includes a main or body portion 15 and the flap 13.
The body portion 15 of the element 11 is preferably of the saine conliguration as the element 10. In the for-m of the invention illustrated the body portion 15 is round or in the form of a disc. In accordance with the invention the body portion 15 of the elenient lll/is secured to the element 10 at its outer -edge or periphery. The body portion 15 may be secured to the element 10 by suitable stitching 16 which acts to bind the edges of the elements 10 and 11 as well as to secure them together. The stitching 16 eXtends around the edges of the elements 10 and 11 between the opposite sides or edges of the flap 13 which pro-jects from the edge of the main portion 15 of the element 11. The elements 10 and 11 are not secured together at the line of joinder of the flap 13and the body portion 15 of the element 11. This provides the filling opening 14 for the space or pocket The flap 13 is preferably integral with or formed of the same piece of material asthe 13. The cut 17 is preferably formed concentric to the outer edge or periphery of the flap. VThe cut 17 preferably terminates at dia-Inetrically opposite points as illustrated in Figs. 4 and 6 ofthe drawings. The-element 11 is bent or folded at the, line ofz joinder between the body portionA 15 and the flap 13 so that the inner portion 18 of the flap is normally against the outer side or back of the body portion 15 and the flap 13 is bentor Vfolded so that its outer portion 19 is folded back upon the inner portion 18. The flap 13 is preferably bent or folded at the points of termination of the cut' 17 so that the central portion of the flap 13 is notbent and remains flat to project outwardly from the flapY atthe line along which the flap is-folded or bent. This central projecting portion of the flap forms a tab 2O which normally rests-against the body portion 15 of the element 11. The tab 20 formed in this mannen provides an opening 21 in the inner portion 18 of the flap. The opening 21 communicates with the filling opening 14 when the flap 13.1is in 'the up orv out position illustrated in F ig. 7
of the drawings. The opening 21 is of semicircular configuration.
A radially projecting flange 22 is provided at the edge of the`flapf13. The flange 22V is provided at the outer edge of the outer portion 19 of the flap. The outer edge ofthe flange may be curved while the opposite side edges 40 of the flange may be inwardly divergent as clearly illustrated in Figs. 4 and 8`of the drawings. The outer curved edge of the flange 22 is secured to the-edge portion of the element 10 at the opening 14. The flange 22 may be secured to the element 10 by suitable stitching 23. Vhen the flap 13 is raised to the position illustrated in Fig. 7 of the drawings and pressure is applied to the opposite peripheral edges ofthe flap to bulge the sides of the flap outward, powder may be filled through the openings 21 and 14 into the space .Vhen the flap is raised it tends to bend along the line of joinder of the flange 22 with the portion 15 shown by the broken line 41 in.

ln Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings I have shown a bag or receptacle 30 for carrying the powder puff. The receptacle or carrier 30 is provided to contain the powder puff so that it may be readily carried in a pocket or purse. The carrier 3G may be of any suitable formation. The carrier 30 is preferably formed Vof a non-porous material or fabric that is virnpervious to face powder. The carrier 30 may be formed of the same materialV as the back or element 11 of the puff. Inthe particular case illustrated the carrier 30 is shown as formed of a single piece of material having opposite parallel side edges 31. The` piece of material forming the carrier 30 is folded back upon itself so that the side edges 31. may be stitched together. by suitable stitchingV 32. A flap 33 may he Drovided at the open end of the carrier 3U. The flap may be formed with a rounded outer'end and the stitching 32 may extend continuously along the edges 31 andthe edges of the. flan 33. The carrier 30 is proportioned to carry the powder puff'provided by the invention and. provides a means for readily carrying the puff.
It is believed that the utility and practicability of the puff provided by the present invention will be readilyunderstoodL from the foregoing detailed description. It is to be noted that the entire article is formed of but two sectionsy or pieces of fabrics. It is further to be noted that the pull'l is of eX- tremely simple construction and inexpensive of manufacture. The flap 13 and features associated therewith form an effective means for normally closing the .filling opening 14 at the edge of the pufl1 and also form ameans Yfor handling or using the puff. The stitchl ing 23 and the stitching securing the edges 40 .andL also act to normally maintain the flap 13 yin its closing position against the body portion 15 of the element 11. The side edges 40 of the flange 22 being secured to the body of element 1l positively hold the flap in the closed position until deliberately opened. To fill powder into the puff, the flap is raised and pressure is applied to the opposite peripheral edges of the flap so that the portions 18 and 19 are bulged apart. This also widens the opening 14 so that powder may be readily filled into the space 12.
Having described only a typical preferred form of my invention, I do not wish to limit myself to the specific details set forth, but wish to reserve to myself any changes or variations that may appear to those skilled in the art or fall within the scope of the following claims.
Having described my invention, l claim:
1. A powder puif including, an element porous to powder, an element impervious to powder secured to the porous element, there being a space between the elements having a filling opening, and a closure means for the opening including, a iiap integral with the impervious element stitched to the porous element at the opening in a manner to be normally folded over the opening.
2. A powder puff including, an element porous to powder, an element impervious to powder secured to the first-mentioned element at its edge only to form a space between the elements, there being a portion of the edge of the porous element. free of the impervious element forming an opening for the space, and closure means for the opening including a flap integral with the impervious element joining the impervious element at the opening, and means permanently attaching the opposite edge of the flap to the porous element at the opening, so that the flap normally lies against one of the elements and closes the opening.
3. A powder puff including, an element porous to powder. an element impervious to powder secured to the lirstunentioned element at its edge to form a space between the elements, there being a portion of the edge of the porous element free of the impervious element forming an opening for the space, and closure means for the opening including a flap joining the impervious element at the opening, and stitching securing the opposite edge of the flap to the porous element at the opening in a manner so that it normally folds over the opening.
4. A powder puii7 including, an element porous to powder, an element impervious to powder secured to the first-mentioned element at its edge only to form a space between the elements, there being a portion of the edge of the porous element free of the impervious element forming an opening for the space, and closure means for the opening including a flap integral with the impervious element joining the impervious element at the opening, and stitching securing the opposite edge of the flap to the porous element the opening so that it normally folds over the opening and closes it.
5. A powder puff including, an element porous to powder, an element impervious to powder secured to the first-mentioned ele ment at its edge only to form a space between the elements, there being a portion of the edge of the porous element free of the impervious element forming an opening for the space, and closure means for the opening including a flap integral with the impervious element joining the impervious elen'ient at the opening and having a flange at its opposite edge, and stitching permanently securing the flange to the porous element at the opening so that the flap normally folds over the opening and closes it. f.

A powder pull including, an element porous to powder, an element impervious to powder secured to the first-mentioned element at its edge only to form a space between the. elements, there being` a portion of the edge of the porous element free of the impervious element forming an opening for the space, and closure m-eans for the opening including a flap integral with the impervious element joining the impervious element at the opening and a radial flange at the opposite edge of the flap, and stitching securing the outer edges secured to the porous element at the opening and the sid-e edges of the flange to the impervious element, so that the iiap is normally folded over the opening against the impervious element.
7. A powder puit consisting solely of a porous element and an impervious element, the edges of the elements being secured together to provide a space between them for holding a comminuted substance, there being an edge portion of the porous element free of the impervious element forming a filling opening for the space, the impervious element having a flap normallyk folded back upon its outer side at a line adjacent said filling opening, the flap being folded back upon itself to have an edge portion at the filling opening, the said edge portion being permanently secured to the porous element at the filling opening so that the flap is normally retained in the position where it lies against the impervious element and closes the filling opening.

A powder puff including a porous element, an impervious element, thel elements being secured together at their edO'es to provide a space between them for holding a comminuted substance, the porous element having an edge portion free of the impervious element forming av lling openingv for the space, and a flap joining the impervious element'at the fllling'opening and bent alonge a line adjacent the filling opening to lie against the outer side ofthe impervious element'7 the flap being foldedbaclr upon itself toghave an edge' at the fillingl opening, and means permanently attaching the saidvedge of the `flap to the porous element so that the flap normally remains folded back upon itself and lies against the outer side of the impervious element to close the Ellingopenng.
9. vA powder puffn including a porous element, an impervious element, the elements beingsecured togetherll at their edges to provide a space between them for holding a comminuted substance, the porous element having an edge portion free of the impervious element forming a filling opening for the space, and a flap joining; the impervious element at thefilling opening and bent along a line adjacent the filling opening to lie against the outer side of; the impervious element, vthe flap being folded back upon itself to have an edge at the filling opening, and means permanently attaching the said edge of the flap to the porous element so that the flap normally remainsy folded back upon itself and lies against the outer side of the impervious element to close the fillingv opening, the flap having an opening in its under side communicating with the filling opening when the flap is raised away from the outer side of the impervious element.
