My present invention relates to vanity cases or bags which actually form one of the most important accessories of a ladys dressing case. The invention relates in a general 5 way to any kind of powder cases, intended to be rcmovably or nonremovably housed or arranged in hand-bags or the like, as well as to powder-boxes forming independent articles.

In any known vanity case the powder is is contained in the body of the vanity case, which generally is made of the shape of a flat case or box with a cover hinged thereto or to be screwed thereon. If powder is taken with the usual powder-puff, a portion thereof will always be spread away, even in the case of a careful manipulation. Just upon opening the case the powder will be disengaged therefrom with the well-known objections. f course such disengagement may be avoided to a certain extent, but to this end the height of the case should be highly increased, which is inadmissable.

According to my present invention, in order to avoid this objection, the powder is contained in a tubular bag, the bottom of which is attached to or forms the bottom wall itself of the powder case. Said bag, made of any desired flexible material, such as leather, fabric or the like, is open at the top, provided with a wire or a rigid or elastic metal spring (or any other material sufliciently rigid for holding the-bag open at its upper rim), said wire or spring corresponding in shape to the shape of the transverse section of the bag and having attached to it (by stitchings, a hem or the like) the upper rim of the bag. Practically the open bag will have the shape of a tube placed upight on the inner face of the body of the powder case, with which it is made integral, the upper opening of the being practically undistortable, and enabling the powder-puff to be easily introduced without permitting powder to be disengaged therefrom laterally. In order to close the case the wire or spring will be slightly turned around itself and pressed downwardly at the same time, whereby the flexible side wall of the tube or will be twisted around its central axis substantially midway its height, thus tightly enclosing the powder,

the wire or metal spring being turned down upon the closed body of the bag. In order to open the case, all that is necessary is to untwist and pull the bag slightly upwardly. A powder or vanity case according to my invention is illustrated by way of non limitative example in the accompanying drawing, wherein:

Fig. 5 is a section on line VV of Fig. 2. The vanity case comprises a small flat case, for instance of circular shape, the cover 1 of which is connected to the body 2 by means of a hinge 3, the fastening means of any desired type being designated by 4-4:. Said case-may be made of any desired rigid or flexible material, and if desired, it may be attached into a ladys hand-bag or form an independent unit itself or in combination with other articles (red pencil or the like). Attached to the bottom wall of the body 2 by any suitable means, such. as stitchings, gluing or the like, is a tube 5, the side wall of which is'made of flexible material. Said tube is closed at the bottom by the bottom wall of the body 2, whilst at the top it'is held open by means of a rigid ring 6, made for instance of wire or a metal spring. The powder is contained in said tube and owing to the undistortability of the upper rim thereof, the powder-puff may be easily inserted into the tube for taking powder therefrom, the open vanity case being for instance held by one hand and the powder containing tube being in an upright position on the bottom wall of the body of the vanity case. In order to close the vanity case, the bag or tube 5 will first be closed. All that is necessary to this end is to slightly turn (about one half revolution) the ring 6, whereby the side wall of the bag or tube will v be twisted around itself and the vertical axis of the tube, at the same time forming a stricture midway of its height, as clearly shown in Fig. 4. Thus the powder will be enclosed in the lower part of the bag, below the point 5 7 in Fig. 4c, the portion of the bag above said point being adapted to be folded together with the ring 6 upon the bottom, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, whereupon the cover 1 of the case may be turned down. It will be obvious 10 that the powder-pull may be placed upon the closed bag 5 prior to the turning down of the cover 1.

The powder containing bag may be opened by a reverse manipulation, turning the ring 6 in opposite direction, at the same time pulling it slightly upwardly. Owing to said rigidring 6 and the regular form of the bag 5, the latter will be held in an upright and open position.

39 It will be obvious that the outline of the transverse section of the bag 5 may be any regular polygon and the shape of the vanity, case may be varied in any desired way. More particularly, said vanity, case may be 3. reduced to a single bottom wall supporting the bag 5 and having a flap adapted to be turned down upon the closed bag to secure the latter in its position. The vanity case may also be made of the shape of a small Q. bill-case with or without clasp.

Having now fully described my said in vention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: p

p In a vanity case intended to contain powder, the combination with a tubular body made of flexible material and adapted to close over said powder by twisting said body around the axis thereof and producing pleats therein, thereby folding said tubular body over the powder, of a case comprising a bot tom portion on which is secured, and which forms the bottom of, the said tubular body, a cover portion hinged directly-to the said bottom portion and adapted to close hermetically over said bottom portion only when said tubular body is in twisted and flattened position over the powder, and fastening means between said bottom and cover portions.
