IMPROVEMENT IN CLASPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 181,819, dated September 5, 1876; application filed April 18, 1876.
Be it known that I, ALVA M. BUTLER, of Constantine, St. Joseph county, Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Clasp t'or Fastening Cigar-Boxes, &c., of whichthc following is a specification:
Figure l is a perspective view of one of my improved clasps, illustrating its use. Fig. 2 is a plan view. of the same, and Fig. 3 is a detail section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention-is to furnish an improved clasp for fastening cigar-boxes and other boxes and packages, which shall be simple in construction, may be easily attached and detached, and will hold the box firmly closed.
The invention consists in a clasplbent at right angles to fit upon the edge ot'a box, and having points formed upon its end parts, to enter the cover and side of said box, as here inafter fully described.
A represents the body and B the cover of a box. 0 is the clasp, which is made of sheet metal, bent at right angles to fit upon the edge of the box, and which may be square, oblong, round, oval, or of any other desired form. In the end parts of the clasp U are cut V-shaped slits, forming points 0, which are bent or curved inward to enter the cover and side of the box, and hold it closed.
The box may be readily'opened by slipping the point of a knife beneath the forward part of the clasp G, and slipping its points 0 out of the side of the box.
The points 0 may be formed upon the ends of the clasp 0, if desired. The clasp 0 may be made of wire, if desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A clasp, O, bent at right angles to fit upon ALVA M. BUTLER.
