SPECIFICATION forming part'of Letters Patent No. 290,290, dated member 18, 1883,

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE W. TRAP- HAGAN, of Glens Falls, Warren county, New York, have invented a new and Improved Sheet-Metal Fastener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention consists of a cheap and novel metallic fastener, more especially intended for securing buckles uponharnesses, carriage-tops, and the like, but is also adapted for use as a clasp or staple for general purposes.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my new and improved metallic fastener. Figs. 2 and 3 are sectional elevations, showingthe method of applying the fastener. Fig. 4 is a plan view, showing the fastener applied for holding a buckle-strap, and Fig. 5 is a plan view of the cut or stamped blank used in making the fastener.

A represents my new and improved metallic fastener, which is formed of a rectangular piece of sheet metal of suitable size, which is first stamped or cut to form the four end or corner points, a a, and the two central points, 12 b. The points a are then bent down, so as to stand at right angles to the upper surface or portion 6 of the fastener. The central points, I), are then folded under the upper portion, 6, of the fastener, and then bent down, so as to stand parallel with points ca, as shown clearly in Fig. 2, which completes the fastener.

In using the fastener for securing the buckle B to the piece of leather 0, suitable slots for the passage of the points a b are first made in the leather (J. The bucklestrap d is then slotted for the passage through it of the points I The points of the clasp are then passed through the slots in the strap d and leather 0, as shown in Fig. 2, and the points are then turned or bent down to make the fastening, as will be understood from Fig. 3.

In attaching the buckle B to the strap E by my improved fastener, the strap E, being of the same width as the buckle-strap d, the straps d E need be slotted only for the passage through them of the central points, I), the end or corner points, a, being clasped over the edges and under the strap E, as will be understood from Fig. 3. In this manner it will be seen that the buckle-strap cl is very securely held in place, and that its edges are at the same time clasped firmly down upon the strap or leather to which it is attached by the fastener. Besides, the fastener is cheap, durable, easily applied, and when applied presents a neat ap pearance, and the fastener is applicable to many uses.

Havingthus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improved article of manufacture, the metallic fastener A, having the side or end points, a, and the central points, 12, formed from a single blank, substantially as shown and described.
