UNITED STATES ALTON H. FANOHER, OF BROOKLYN,
ASSIGNOR TO THE AMERICAN PACK- AGE COMPANY, OF NEW' YORK, N. Y.
METAL B OX HING E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 284,828, dated September 11, 1883.
Application filed July 20, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALTON FANOI-IER, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Metal Box Hinges, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. I
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a metal box to which my improvement has been applied, shown with the body in section and the cover raised. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same, shown closed. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the body of the box, the cover being removed. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the cover before being shaped.
The invention relates to that class of metallic box hinges which are formed by passing atongue on the cover through a slot in the box-body and bending it over the top edge to form a hook or eye that will keep it in place and yet allow it to turn.
The object of the invention is to prevent said hinges from having lateral play 011 the top edge of the box-body, and to allow the cover to fit evenly down all around the top 3o edge of the box-body.
A represents the body of a metal box, and
B the cover, each of which parts is made of a single piece stamped or struck up into the required shapei In the edge of the rear part of the body A 5 is formed a notch, O, of a length equalto the required width of the hinge, and below the said notch and parallel therewith is formed a slot, D, of an equal length with the notch G, leaving a bar, E, to serve as a pintle for the 0 hinge.
Upon the rear edge of the cover B is formed a tongue, F, of a width equal to the length of the notch O and slot D. The tongue F is passed through the slot D, and is bent up 5 around the bar E into the notch (J, forming the hinge. The end of the tongue F is recessed, as shown at G in Figs. 1 and 4, to cause it to be bent more readily.
With this construction the expense and 50 annoyance of forming hinges in the ordinary manner are avoided, and the expense of construction becomes merely nominah Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters 5 5 Patent, is I A metallic box-body having the notch C over and corresponding in length with the bar E and slot D to allow a tongue, F, on the cover to fold into it, as shown and described. 60
ALTON H. FANGHER.
