WILLIAM B. NEWMAN AND TILDEN .L WILKINSON, oF WAREENSBUEG, Mo.
IMPROVEMENT lN PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 180,624, dated August 1, 1876; application filed May 13, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WM. B. NEWMAN and TILDEN J. WILKINSON, of VVarrensburg, in the county of Johnson and State of Missouri, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Sulky and Breaking Plows, and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construetion and operation of the same, reference being had'to the annexed dra-wings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and gures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawingsis arepresentation of a side elevation of our snlky and breaking plow; and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view thereof'.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrau gement ofa sulky-plow, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawings, A represents the axle with wheels B B and a frame, C, secured to the axle. This frame supports the drivers seat D in rear ofthe axle, as Shown. Through the front end of the frame C passes a square shaft, a, parallel with the axle, said shaft being` at one end outside ot' the frame provided with'a- T-shaped head, b, standing on a line with the draft. To this head the plow-beam E is pivoted by means of ears d dou its under side Itting against the ends of the head, and a bolt passing horizontally through them. G is the plow, attached to the beam E, which plow runs in front of the wheelthe right or left, according as a right or left hand plow is used. Above the joint ofthe beam are standards ff secured thereto, between the upper ends of which the tongue H is pivoted, the
front end of said tongue passing through a guide-loop, J, attached to the beam, and the tongue provided at its extreme front end with a three-horse neck-yoke, I. From the rear end of the tongue II extend straps h h, onel 011 each side of the beam and below the same, and the lower ends of said straps attached to the lower end of a forked lever, K, which iS pivoted to the beam, and held at any point desired by a ratchet, k, andpawl t', as shown. By these means the plow may be raised and lowered as required, to regulate the depth of plowing, and also raised. entirely out of the ground.
From the upper end of the inner Standard f extends a rod, m, to an arm, n, on a shaft, p, which is provided with a lever, L, and said lever held at any position in a suitable ratchet. By this means the plow can be tilted to the right or left, as required, the plow-beam turning on its pivot in the head b.
hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two witnesses.
