STATES JOHN H. AUSBURN AND VIVIAN AUSBURN, OF ELWOOD, TEXAS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 14, 1908.
Application filed. May 13, 1907. Serial No. 373,400.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, J OHN I-I. AUsBURN and VIVIAN A'UsBURN, citizens of the United States, residing at Elwood, in the county of Fannin and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Flows, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in turning plows, especially with relation to the provision of a wheel for operating in the bottom of a furrow in rear of the lower end of the standard, which wheel serves the purposes of an ordinary land-side plate and enables such land-side plate to be dispensed with and also in connection with the lever connected thereto enables the plow to be set to run at any desired inclination and at any desired depth in the furrow.
The invention consists in the construction, combination'and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the plow constructed in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, showing the land-side thereof, Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the same, Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the same, Fig. 5 is a detail elevation, showing one form of the wheel adapted for use in connection with this improved plow.
The beam 1, which may be of any suitable construction, is here shown as a metal beam formed integrally with the standard 2, the said standard constituting the down turned rear end of the beam. A mold-board 3 is provided on its rear side with an off-set or bracket 4, which is bolted or otherwise suit ably secured to one side of the standard. A
similar bracket or off-set 5 is also provided for the mold-board and is bolted or otherwise secured to the standard at a point near the bottom thereof. The point or share 6 bears on the lower front edge of the standard and also bears on and is secured to a recessed portion of the front edge of the mold-board, as at 7. ing their lower ends secured respectively to the standard and to the inner side of the They may be secured by any suitable means. The usual rungs 9 connect the handles, and a pair of braces 10 are provided therefor which extend therefrom to op posite sides of the beam.
In accordance with this invention the usual land-side plate and the frog bar are dispensed The handles 8 are here shown as havwith and in lieu thereof a wheel 11 is employed to serve the purposes of a land-side plate in keeping the plow straight in the furrow, and also adapted for use in adjusting the plow so that the same may be run at any desired inclination and at any desired depth in the furrow. The wheel 11 has an axle 12, which has one bearing in the rear end of the bar 13 and another bearing in a brace arm 14, which is bolted to one side of the said bar. The front end of the said bar is pivotally connected, as at 15, to one side of the standard at the lower end thereof. The wheel may be of any suitable size and of any suitable construction. In Fig. 3 it is. shown as beveled on opposite sides to form a sharp cutting edge 16. A wheel thus constructed is (laspecially adapted for use in light sandy s01 In Fig. 5 the wheel is shown as provided with a broad tread 17 to bear on the bottom of the furrow and with a sharpened flange 18 at one side of the said tread to cut into the bottom of the furrow and guide the plow.
A hand lever 19, which is provided at its lower end with a rearwardly extending arm 20, is fulcrumed, as at 21, on one side of the standard at a suitable distance from the lower end thereof. Said arm 20 is connected by a link 22 to the rear end of the bar 13. A segment 23 is provided on one side of the standard near the fulcrum of the lever and the latter is provided with a locking dog 24 of usual construction to engage the notches of the said segment and lock the lever in any desired position.
It will be understood that by adjusting the lever the wheel 11 may be raised and lowered and set at any desired point so as to cause the plow to be set to run at any desired depth in the soil.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is
' 1. A plow comprising a beam, a standard, a mold-board and point secured to the standard, a lever fulcrumed to the said standard, a bar pivotally connected to the standard, a Wheel carried by said bar and having a cutting edge to cut in the bottom of a furrow and to perform the function of a land-side, and a link connecting said lever to said bar for the purpose set forth. i
2. A plow comprising a beam, a standard, a mold-board secured to the standard, the latter disposed at the land-side edge of the mold-board, a rearwardly extending bar hav- If a furrow and adapting said wheel to perform ing its front end disposed on the land-side of In testimony whereof, We affix our signa the standard and ivotally connected to the tures in presence of two witnesses. standard a whee carried by said bar and 1 JOHN H AUSBUR U I N. havlng a cuttlng ed e to cut 1n the bottom of 3 VIVIAN AUSBURN- the function of a land-side plate and means to Witnesses: raise and lower said wheel and the lower end J.
