4 CARDBOARD BOX ELEMENT Filed Aug. 5. 1928 s. H.Dauis E. L. Curt-is WT. Schleicher Inventors xMMW Attornegs Patented Feb. 17, 1931 UNETED STATES PATENT OFFICE STANLEY H. DAVIS, OF TOLEDO, AND EARL L. CURTIS AND \VILIEOBDT. SCHLEICHER,
OF SANDUSKY, OHIO, ASSIGNORS TO THE AMERICAN CRAYON COMPANY, 015 SAN- DUSKY, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO l CARDBOARD BOX ELEMENT Application filed. August 3, 1928. Serial No. 297,267.
Our invention relates to cardboard box elements, such as cardboard box covers, and particularly to lining such elements, and the principal object of our invention is to provide a new and improved means of accomplishing that end. In the drawings accompanying this specification and forming a part of this application we have shown, for purposes of illustration, one form which our inventionmay assume, and in these drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan View of a box embodying our invention, shown with the cover open, while Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary section taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
In the drawings our invention is shown applied to the cover 11 of a box 12 provided with a tray 13 carrying a plurality of paint and pencil devices 14 to forma paint set, and the cover 11 is secured to the box 12 by a fabric hinge strip, not shown, pasted to the adjacent side of the cover and to the adjacent side of the box.
The cover 11 herein shown comprises a i cardboard body 15 having a base portion 16 from which rise four sides 17 covering the inner surface of the cardboard body 15 is a lining 18 formed to overlie both the base 16 and the four sides 17, and overlying the outer surface of the cardboard body 15 is a facing 19 pasted to the body 15, covering both the base 16 and sides 17 of the body 15, and having its peripherial portion 20 turned over the rim 21 of the sides 17 of the body 15 and i then pasted down to the periphery of the lining 18.
Those skilled in the art will appreciate that in this manner we secure the lining 18 firmly in position by a most simple and inexpensive method involving no operation additional to that which would be required to secure the facing 19 in position were no lining 18 employed.
But in addition to that the mounting of the lining 18 firmly fixed in position within the cover 11 yet not pasted to the base 16 permits the utilization of this lining as a carrier, for example, as in the embodiment of our invention herein illustrated, wherein we have shown'the lining 18 as provided with four diagonal slots 22 into which have been insert-' ed the four corners 23 ot a plurality of sheets 24;.
Those skilled in the art will readily appreciate that this forms a most simple and inexpensive manner or mounting articles in the box, for example, in the present case, for mounting in the box pictures to be colored with the paint set. V
The cover of the box maybe held against fully opening by means of ;a cord '25 tied at its ends in apertures 26 and27 formed in the cover sides 17 and in the sides. of the box 12.
Under these circumstancesthose skilled in the art will realize that the embodiment of our invention herein shown and described accomplishes at least the principal object of our invention. At the same time those skilled in the art also will realize that our invention is adapted for uses other than those shown or suggested herein, and also that our invention embodies advantages other than those pointed out or suggested herein, and that the particular embodiment of our invention herein shown and described may be variously changed and modified without sacrificing these other uses and advantages, or departing from the spirit of our invention, wherefore it will be understood that the disclosure herein is illustrative only, and that our invention is not limited thereto.
We claim 1. A cardboard box element, such asa cardboard box cover, comprising: a cardboard body, having a base, and having sides rising fromsaid base, said base and sides being of a form-retaining character; a lining, for the inner surface of said base and at least the inner surface of said sides, said lining being unsecured to said base; and a facing, for at least a portion of the outer surface of said body, having at least a portion of its periphery turned over, and secured to the rim of said sides and pasted down to at least a portion of the periphery of said lining, thus to hold said lining in position.
2. A cardboard box element, such as a cardboard box cover, comprising: a cardboard body; a lining, for at least a portion of the inner surface of said body, provided with spaced slots through which portions of sheets,
such as corners of cards, may be inserted thus to be held in position on said body; and a facing. for at least a portion of the outer surface of said body, having at least a portion of its periphery turned over the rim of said body and pasted down to at least a portion of the periphery of said lining, thus to hold said lining in position.
30 8. A cardboard box element, such as a cardboard box cover, comprising: a cardboard body, having a base, and having sides rising from said base; a lining, for at least the inner surface of said sides and the peripheral portion of said base, provided in said peripheral portion with spaced slots through which portions of sheets, such as corners of cards, may be inserted thus to be held in position on said body; and a facing, for at least a porn' tion of the outer surface of said body, having at least a portion of its periphery turned over the rim of said body and pasted down to at least a portion of the periphery of said lining, thus to hold said lining in position.
In testimony whereof, we hereunto aflix our signatures.
STANLEY H. DAVIS. EARL L. CURTIS. WILFORD T. SCI-ILEICHER.
