Abstract

1,061,694. Wrapper-encased packages. H. RUMSEY. July 23, 1965 [July 23, 1964], No. 31635/65. Heading B8C. A tear tab 15 (Fig. 1) on a stiff backing sheet enables an overlying tight transparent wrapper 12 of a package to be torn in a controlled manner so that access is provided to the package contents 10 while the structure of the package is retained. A recess may be provided in the outer surface of the package contents, adjacent to the end of the tear tab, in order to facilitate piercing the wrapper and lifting the tear tab. The wrapper is heat sealed around the package, and may subsequently be heat-shrunk or evacuated. In the embodiment of Figs. 5-7 (not shown) the backing sheet completely surrounds the package contents, and is provided with interlocking tabs and apertures. In the embodiment of Figs. 11-13 (not shown), a viewing window is provided in the backing sheet, and weakening lines (45) enable the tear tab to be lifted from the backing sheet. In this embodiment a tab (44) projects between the package contents. The tear tab may be incorporated in a box structure, which may comprise a tray sliding within a sleeve. A shelf (22, 23); Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown) may be provided between layers of the package contents, by means of strap portions on the backing sheet. In the embodiment of Figs. 8-10 (not shown) a base portion (35) of the backing sheet is longer than the package contents, so that the side walls (36, 37) slant inwardly, enabling the locking tab and recess (41, 40) to be inter-engaged without distorting the contents. The tear tab may be attached to a lug (65), Figs. 17-20 (not shown), which is inserted between the package contents without surrounding them, and in this case the tab may be completely removed from the package after tearing the wrapper by means of the tab. The material of the tear tab and backing sheet in all embodiments may be paperboard, fibreboard or a plastics material stronger and more rigid than that of the wrapper.
