The type of brushesreferred to are commonly of relatively inexpensive construction and are most' generally provided as advertising novelties bearing advertisingmatter, whereby the matter of cost of produc-` tionis a very important item, it beingv necessary for their extensive production, that they be capable of being produced at a very low cost.

The practice commonly followed in the manufacture of brushes of the type referred to, particularly as advertising novelties, is to form the body of the brush of wood to which the bristles are secured, and to mount the wood body in a metal bezel to which the Celluloid-covered top plate, forming the back of the brush, is secured. Such constructions, however, are quite expensive to manufacture and furthermore cannot, in the commercial manufacture of the brushes, be provided of elongated form and particularly of such form that opposite edges of the body of the brush are straight, or substantially straight, because of the shrinking of the wood and the consequent looseness of fit of the wood bodies in the bezels, which prevents the crimping of the top plates upon the bezels into the desired interlocking position.

My object is to provide a construction of brush of the general type above referred to which shall not only be more economical Of manufacture than brushes of this general type as hitherto constructed, but which may be provided in any desirable shape, even of oblong form with its opposite edges substantially straight and with their top portions securely crimped in place, and forming structures, the parts of which are firmly and rigidly secured together.

The material forming the body portion being thus of a character which does not shrink or warp under normal conditions, the parts of the brush may be assembled to form long after the body portion has been constructed. lin the manufacture of the brushes it is preferred, however, that the body portion 8 be molded to shape into the bezel 5, the bezel having been preliminarily introduced into a mold presenting a cavity of a shape and size correspondingvwith the shape of the brush it is desired to be produced, and the material to form the bodyportion 3 then introduced into the mold to fill the bezel 5, as shown. The upper surface of the body portion 3 preferably has embedded therein a sheet 12 o't' material to form a binder for the material of the body and prevent the body from breaking should it be dropped upon the licor before being assembled With the top plate portion. From the foregoing, it Will be understood that brushes ot' any desirable form, even those or" oblong shape and having parallel, or substantially parallel, sides, may be manufactured and no diiculties in the crimping of the top plates in place on the bezels, are presented, inasmuch as the body portions closely fit the bezels. y While I have illustrated and described a particular construction embodying my invention, l do not Wish to be understood as intending to limit it thereto as various changes and modifications may be made in the structure shown, Without departing trom the spirit of my invention.

llVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

l. A brush comprising, in combination, a body portion of set plastic material having bristles embedded therein, a retaining band surrounding said body portion and provided at its upper end vvith an outwardly-extend ing peripheral flange, the body portion exe tending substantially iiush With the upper edge ot the band whereby the band is reinforced against exure in the crimping oit the cover, and a cover for said body extending over the top oi' said body and crimped into engagement With the flange ot said band.

2. A brush comprising, in combination, a body portion of set plastic material having bristles embedded therein, and having a sheet of binding material embedded and anchored in its upper portion and a cover secured in place about said body portion and extending over the same in spaced relation to the upper surface thereof and to said binding strip.

3. A brush comprising, in combination, a body of set plastic material having bristles embedded therein, a retaining band surrounding said body portion and provided at its upper end With an outwardly-extending peripheral flange and a cover for said body formed or" an inner and an outer member the edges of Which extend over the top of said body and are crimped into engage ment With the Flange of said band, the outer member of said cover being of material adapted to receive printing or decorative matter.
