Specification of Letters latent.
Patented Nev, i5, 192i.
Application led 'March 10, 1919. Serial No. 281,791,
T o @ZZ LU/tom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, Bonnin A. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pacific Grove, in the county of Mon-- tereyand State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Monuments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention', such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in monumentsand more 'particularly to such as are employed as markers for graves, one object of the invention being to providel a monument of the type specified which may be constructed and placed in position Aat a moderate cost; which shall be ornamental in appearance, and which shall be capable of successfully withstanding the influences which may be caused by weather and other conditions to which monuments are subjected. 4
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
1n the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a perspective view of a monument showing an embodiment of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same.
My improved monument comprises a base member 1 and an upright member 2 superimposed upon the base member, each of said members comprising a body portion ofwood, such as pine or red wood, as indicated at 3 and 1. The wooden members 3 and 4 will preferably be made separately and the wooden base portion 3fmay be made with a socket 3fL to receive a tenon portion 2a at the lower end of the upright portion 3.
rlfhe wooden base 3 is covered on its sides and bottom with non-corrodible sheet metal- 5 and the top face of saidvbase 3 is covered by a sheet 52L of a similar metal having fianges 5b which overlie the sheet metal sides and ends and secured by pins 6 of noncorrodible metal.
The wooden upright member 2 is covered on its front and back with sheet 7 of non-corrodible metal and the edgeV face portions of said wooden upright member have applied thereto, a continuous sheet 8 of non-corrodible metal, and this sheet is suitably bent to properly conform to the several edge face portions of the member 2. The metal sheet 8 is provided at its edges with flanged portions 8a notched at intervals, as at 8b, so that said fianged portions may overlie edge portions of the front and back sheets and the flanged portions maybe perfor-ated to receive fastening devices 8C; The metal coverings for the respective wooden members may be separately prepared in convenient knock-down condition so as to facilitate shipment and the metal sheets may be readily applied to the wooden parts. rfhe two wooden members may be covered separately and then fitted together and the completed structure will be light and easy to handle and will be waterproof and also weather-proof.
Instead 4of 4making the metal covering of aluminum, sheets vor plates of brass, bronze or 'other metal or material which will not be inj'uriously affected by weather or other iniiuences to which monuments lare subjected, may be employed. 'y
The main or upright member 2 of the monument is provided on its face with names, dates and inscriptions, which may be formed of gilded glass letters and figures cemented in place, as indicated at 9, and a plate 10 containing a photograph, may be cemented to the upright member of the monument with the use of suitable waterproof cement. The plate 10 may be made of copper and coated with porcelain which .may be baked on.
lnstead of making the letters and figures of glass I may make them of metal, or they may be stamped in or embossed on the metal of the monument.
Various changes might be made in the details of construction of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof or limiting its scope'and hence l do not wish to restrict myself to the precise details herein set forth.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Amonument comprising a wooden body portion providing a base member and a separate upright member supported by said base member, sheets of noncorrodible metal on the front and ,back of the upright wooden member, a sheet of non-corrodible metal covering the top and sides of said upright wooden member and having flanges pinned to the front and back metal sheets wah* and to the Wooden upright 'member, and sheets of noncorrodib1e metal covering the Vbase Wooden member, the top sheet o f the Vmetal .covering of the base member pinned to the latter.
2. A monument comprising a base mem-` f edge face, the-edges of said strip being notched and perforated, whereby it is adapted to be bent over and fitted about .the edge faces of the body member and to be fastened thereto, in 'combination with a base member having metallic covering.
A monument` capable `of being shipped in knock-down condition, comprising, base and upright members of nail-receiving material, sheets .of non-corrodible metal to cover the front and-back of the upright member, a sheet of non-corrodible metal,` to cover the top and sides of said upright memberV and having flanges overlying edge .portions ofthe .front land. back sheets,` said flanges having perforations for fastening .de-
vices, nonfcorrodible sheet metal to surround Y the `base member, and a non-corrodible metal sheet toicover the top of the basemember around the lower `portion of the upright A member vand-having perforated flanges for the accommodation of fastening means, said last-mentioned fianges to overlie upper edge portions ofthe sheet metal which surrounds thebase member.
14, A monument capable ofbeing shipped in knock-down condition, comprising a Wooden base member, a separatefvvooden upright member mounted on said base member, front and back sheets of non-corrodible metal on said upright member, a sheet of non-corrodible metal to cover the ,sides` and top of the upright member, said last-men ltioned sheet bent at intervals and: provided with flanged edge portions notched atintervals Vand adapted to overlieedge portions of the front and back sheets, non-corrodible sheet metal to-surround the sides, ends. and
bottom of the Wooden base member, and a sheet of non-corrodible metal to cover the ton of the Wooden basemember and having flanges to overlie edge portionsA of the sheet metal for the base member,4 and non-cor,- rodible fastening devices to pass through the various flanges andsheets Which they overlie and enter the respectivewooden members.
