To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES II. HOLD- Runen, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stonington, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foundation Structures, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to foundation structures and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character' especially designed and adapted for use'in connection with a grave marker or the like and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved structure of this general character which may be readily applied in desired position and which permits the marker or the like to be readily removed as desired.
Furthermore it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved structure of this character especially designed for use in cemeteries and which emf bodies means whereby a marker or the like may be readily removed to facilitate the mowing of the grass.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved foundation structure whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view partly in section and partly in elevation illustrating a foundation structure constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view in perspective looking from above of the foundation structure as herein embodied;
Figure 3 is a view in perspective looking from below of my improved structure as herein employed.
My improved structure comprises a plate l of desired dimensions and preferably of metal and which when in applied position is disposed or embedded in the ground with the upper surface of the plate substantially i' even with the roots ofthe grass or sod. The under surface of the plate at its axial center is provided with a depending enlargement or protuberance 2 provided with a threaded opening 3 in which is engaged an end portion of a stake 4 preferably metallic and substantially about two feet in length. In applying the plate l in working position this stake 4 is forced down into the ground and thereby provides means whereby the plate is effectively anchored in desired position.
The plate l adjacent its opposite end portions is provided with the openings 5 which are adapted to receive the pins or rods 6 depending from the bottom or base wall of the marker M. By this means the marker M is maintained in its desired setting but may be readily removed so that the same will offer no obstruction to the mowing or cutting of the grass and thereby overcome the objections generally had against the use of markers. As particularly illustrated in Figure l it is to be noted that the pins 6 are of a length to extend entirely through the plate l and to penetrate the ground therebelow and thereby also providing means for effectively maintaining the plate l in desired position.
The plate 1 is preferably of the same dimensions and configuration as the bottom or base wall of the marker M. IVhile I have particularly referred to my foundation structure as being used in connection with the marker M, it is to be understood that itk can be employed to the same advantage in connection with a corner marker, monuments or kindred device.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a foundation structure constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from ythe principles and spirit thereof and for this reason Ido not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.

A supporting structure of the class described comprising a plate provided at its having a threaded opening, a stakehaving one end portion threaded Within said opening, said plate being provided with means for coaotion with a member superimposed thereon for maintaining said member in applied position. t Y
2. In Combination With a member provided With depending pins, a foundation structure therefor comprising a plate adapted to rest upon the ground and to be embedded below the surface thereof, said plate having openings to receive the depending pins of the member to detaohably hold the member to the plate, said pins being of a length to extend entirely through the plate and to penetrate the ground below the plate, and an anchoring stake depending from the central portion of the plate.
