Description

T. T. SNOW.
PosT. APPLICATLQN FILED JULY 23| l9l9.
Patented Mar.23,1920.
lilldlillllll) STATES PATENT OFFUE@ THEODORE T. SNOW, OE SIOUX FALLS, SOUTH DAKOTA.`
Specication ofLett-ers Patent.
Application ledJuly 23, 1919. Serial No. 312,663.
To (AZZ fui/tom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, Ti-mononn T. Snow, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sioux lFalls, in the county of` IlViinnehaha and State of South Dakota7 have invented certain new and useful improvements in Posts, of which the following is a speciiication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This :invention relates to certain improvements in posts, and it is an object of the invention to provide a device ofthis general character having' novel and improved means whereby the same may be effectively anchored in applied position.
Another objectief the invention is to provide a novel and improved post `and anchoring means therefor wherein the post is hollow or tubular and is provided in its walls at a point below the ground line of the post with openings through which Vare adapted to be extended anchoring members or leaves carried by a block capable of movement within the bore of the post.
An additional. object of the invention is to provide novel and improved anchoring means for a post wherein the same is under control of a key or other implement whereby the anchoring means may be rendered operative or inoperative as the accasion of pratico may require.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved post whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler7 less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth,
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
ln order that my invention may be the better understood, l will now proceed to describe the saine with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure l is a view in elevation illustrating a post provided with an anchoring means constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional view taken longitudinally of the post as illustrated in Fig. l, the coacting key being shown in elevation.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken through the post with the anchoring arms extended.
As disclosed in the accompanying d 'awings, P denotes a hollow or tubular post preferably metallic andrectangular in cross section and having its lower end portion closed and arranged on a taper. Each of tlie walls l of the post P at a desired distance below the ground lineofthe post` is provided with an opening 2 preferably constituting a transversely directed slot.
B denotes a block orbody readily insertible within the bore 3 of the post P through the open upper end of the post. The body or block B has secured thereto the outstanding resilient flat arms 4;, herein disclosed as four in number. The inherent resiliency of the arms l is such as to permit the same to suiliciently iieX or bend inwardly toward the body or block B so that said block and arms may be forced or moved alongthe bore 3 of the post P.
The bore 3 of the post P has its inner or closed end positioned a distance below the openings or slots 2 greater than the eX- tended length of each of the arms Il so that when the block or body B has been forced inwardly of the bore 8 to a point substantially at the inner end of said bore 3, the free extremities of the arms 4L in their inwardly folded or flexed position with respect to the block or body B will be below the openings or slots 2.
The central portion of the body or block B .is provided with an opening or slot 5 through which is adapted to be disposed the cross head 6 arranged at an end of the shank 7 of the key K or suitable implement and which shank 7 is of a length to extend exteriorly of the post P through the open end thereof irrespective of the position or location of the body or block B within the bore 3.
After the cross head 6 of the key K has been disposed through the opening 5, the shank 7 of the key K is given substantially a quarter turn so that pull upon the key K will cause the block or body B to move toward the open end of the post P. With the block or body B and arms 4 thereof below the openings or slots 2 the outward movement of the body or block B will result in the arms 4l passing outwardly through the openings or slots 2 so that said arms 4r may be employed as an eifective means to anchor the post P in set position. In order to facilitate the passage of the arms 4: through the openings or slots 2,
Patented Mar. as, ieee( each of the same is arranged longitudinally on a curvature and to further facilitate this passage the upper edge of each of the openings or slots 2 is beveled, as indicated at 8, said bevel being upwardly and outwardly directed. ThroughV the instrumentality of the block or body B and the arms 4 thereof the post P can be readily anchored in position after being set and When it is desired to remove the post P, thekey K can be employed to forceY the block or body B inwardly of the -bore 3- sufficiently to retract the arms 4l, or said key can be engaged with the block or body B through the opening 5 thereof in order to pull the body' or block B outwardly a distance suiicient to retract the arms 4; within the post.
From the foregoing description, it is thoughtV to be obvious that a post constructed in accordance With my invention is particularly Well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated and it Will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modiication without departing from Vthe principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not 'Wish to be understood as limiting myself Yto the precise 'arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
Iny combination with a post having openings in the Wall thereof below the ground line of the post, a plate slidable within the post and including a plurality of radiating foldable arms, the side edges of said arms intersecting each other at the base of the arm, said arms being disposed in right angular relation to each other and in substantially the same plane with the plate when the plate is at the limit of its upward movement within the post, the intersecting portion of said edges engaging the interior corners of the post and ends of the openings therein to hold said arms extended, and a key adapted to be inserted in the post after said post has been driven, and removed from the post after said arms are extended.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses. y
