DOOR BRACE.
APPLICATION FILED DEC.6. 1918 JAMES B. SHYER, or DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
DOOR-BRAGE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented May 20, 1919.
Application filed December 6,1918. Serial No. 265,596.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that 1, JAMES D. SHYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at 7 Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door-Braces, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to door securing devices, particularly to that type employed supplementary to the ordinary door lock or other securing means, and has for its object the provision of an adjustable bracing member adapted for engagement upon a door knob upon the inside of a room and having its other end engageable with the floor at a point spaced from the door, the construction and arrangement of this device being such as to prevent opening of the door.
An important object is the provision of a device of this character, the floor engaging legs of which are adjustable so that it may be used upon any door rovided with a knob regardless of the height of the knob above the floor.
Another object is the provision of a device of this character which is so constructed that a portion thereof will serve to cover the keyhole to prevent spying upon the occupant ofthe room.
A further object is the provision of a device of this character which will be ex-v tremely simple and inexpensive in manufacture, which will be highly eflicient and durable in use, which may be readily dis assembled for convenience in carrying in a traveling bag and which will be a general improvement in the art.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device applied to a door.
Fig. 2 is a detail view of the upper end of the device showing in details the movable knob engaging member and Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view through one ofthe legs.
Referring more particularly to the drawings the letter A designates a door from which protrudes the usual knob B. My device is indicated broadly by the letter C and comprises a V-shaped body 5 formed preferably as a single casting and including divergent tubular leg portions6 connected at their upper ends by the plate portion 7. Rods 8 are disposed for slidable adjustment within the leg portion 6 and may be held in adjusted positions by means of suitable set screws 9.
At its upper end, the body 5 has formed thereon a plate portion 10 provided at its center with a semi-cylindrical recess 11 and having one end portion provided .with a threaded hole 12 and having its other end portion provided with spaced upstanding cars 13. A clamping plate 14 is pivoted .between the cars 13 and has its central portion provided with a semi-cylindrical recess 15 complementary to the recess 11. At its free end, the clamping plate 14 is provided with a threaded hole within which is disposed a clamping screw 16 engageable within the hole 12.
In use, my device is applied to a door by engaging the recess 11 upon the shank of the knob B, after which the clamping plate 14: is swung into engagement with the knob shank and the clamping screw 16 threaded into the hole 10. The device being thus firmly attached to the door knob the legs 8 are so adjusted that they will engage the floor at a point spaced from the door, after which the set screws 9 are tightened to hold the legs in adjusted positions. When the rods 8 are adjusted to the proper length, the device will'be inclined in respect to the door as clearly shown in Fig. 1. After the brace has been thus applied it will be obvious that any attempt to open the door will be frustrated as even extremely slight inward movement of the door will result in such binding as to make further movement impossible. It will be noted that the plate portion 7 connecting-the leg portions 6 will extend over the key hole and serve as a blind for preventing spying upon the occupant of the room. When the use of the device is not required, the rods 8 maybe telescoped in the leg portions 6 so that the devicewill be in compact form convenient for storage in a suit case or other suitable traveling bag.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawing it will be apparent that I have thus provided an extremely simple and efiicient device which may be readily engaged upon a door lmob and which is so constructed as to prevent any unauthorized opening of the door and which will be consequently a great protection against the efforts of these and others.
While I'have shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention it will of course be readily understood that I reserve the right'to make such changes in the form, construction and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention nor the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention I claim l. A device of the character described comprising a V-shaped body including tubular leg portions and a plate connecting said leg portions, rods connected with said leg portions and engageable with a floor, a plate member formed on the upper end of said body and provided with a recess engageable with the shank of a door knob, and a clamping member carried by said second named plate and adapted for embracing engagement with the shank of the door knob.
2. A device of the character described comprising a Vshaped body including tubular leg portions and a plate connecting said leg portions, rods slidably adjustable within said leg portions and engageable with a floor, a plate member formed on the other end of said body and-provided with a recess engageable with the shank of a door knob, a clamping plate hingedly connected at one end upon said second named plate and provided with a recess complementary to said first named recess for embracing engagement upon the shank of the door knob and a clamping screw carried by the other end of said clamping plate and engageable with said second named plate.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
JAMES D. SHYER.
