UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
BORDMAN J. LOOMIS, OF ASHTABULA, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN KEV-FASTENERS.
Specificatiou forming part of Letters Patent No. 167, 107, dated August 24, 1875; application filed July 21, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, BORDMAN J. LooMIs, of
- Ashtabula, in the county of 'Ashtabula and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Key-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being' had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invetion relates to an improvement in key-fasteners, designed for securing the key of a door or other lock from being turned after the lock has been fastened.
My invention consists in a frame or jaw, constructed to enbrace the loop of the key, and a pin passing through the said loop. This jaw is securely attached to the door; but when not in use can be turned down out of the way. The jaw is made to slidein a slotin the standard, whereby it is suited to keys of any length, as
hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In the drawings, Fgure l is a View in perspective ofalock and key, with my key-lock attached and in use. Fig. 2 is an end elevation representing the same, with my key-lock turned down out of the way.
A is a door B, a lock; C, a key. D is a support of any suitable Construction for supporting' niy key-fastener. This support is provided with means for ready attachment to the door A--as, for instance, with a screw-shank,
the pin to the implement, so as always to be ready for use.
It is not essential that the pin H should be chained or otherwise attached to the implement; but it is merely a matter of convenenoe.
so as to facilitate folding the jaw down against the standard, as is obvious by an examination of Fig. 2.
This part of the device is not absolutely essential, as it is evident that the sane efi'ect may be produced iu a variety of ways-as, for instance, forming the said bend in the end of the arm F. i
The operation of the device is as follows: A party having one of these key-fasteners in his possession, and finding himself in a position where it is (lesirable to fasten his doorkey after locking his door, fastens the support D to the door above or below the key, by screwing the shank D' into the Wood. He then adjusts the jaw G upon the loop of the key, and inserts the pin H. The key is thus securely fastened, and cannot be turned by a person on the opposite side of the door. The office of the slot c is topernit the jaw G to be adjusted at any distance from the door to suit keys of different lengths.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A key-fastener, consisting of a support,
D, linged standard E, provided with the slot e, arm F, and jaw Gr, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. The conbination, with the slotted standard E, of the jaw F and pin H, in connection with a key, O, substantially as and for the purposes described.
3. The combination of catch I with the standard E and arm F, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
BORDMAN J. LOOMIS.
