P. MICHEL.
SAFETY DEVIGE FOR LOGK$. APPLICATION FILED MAY 21.1909.
Patented Sept. 21, 1909.
UNITE @TATIZh PATENT @FFIQFQ.
FRIEDRICH MICHEL, 0]? LONG ISLAND CITY, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO OTTO S GROPPER, OF LONG ISLAND CITY, NEW YORK.
SAFETY DEVICE FOR LOCKS.
Application filed May 21, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRIEDRIoI-I MIonnL, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Long Island City, in the county of Queens and State of New York have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Devices for Locks, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to safety de vices for locks and the purpose thereof is to provide a device which can be placed into and temporarily locked in the keyhole so as to obstruct the keyhole and prevent strangers from opening the look by a key or any other instrument.
In order to make my invention more clear the same is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which similar reference letters denote corresponding parts and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device in locked position within the keyhole; Fig. 2 is a similar view of the device in open position within the keyhole; Fig. 3 a rear view of the locked device and Fig. .t a front view thereof.
In the drawing a denotes the keyhole of a look applied to a door, drawer or the like.
The safety device consists of two arms I) somewhat longer than the depth of the keyhole and made of brass, steel or other suit able metal which arms are pivoted together at about the center, as at c to be swung crosswise to one another and the rear ends I) of which are slightly curved and provided with noses (Z. The front ends 6 of said arms are perforated or provided with eyes f.
To use this safety device the arms are turned into the position indicated in Fig. 2, in which the rear ends 6 thereof are contracted so that their noses (Z overlap one another and the front ends thereof are eX- Specification of Letters fiatent.
Patented Sept. 21, race.

panded. In this position the device can be passed through the keyhole a from the front end thereof until the rear ends of the arms project outward from the keyhole. Thereupon the front ends 12 of the arms are turned toward one another until their eyes 1 register. By this movement the rear ends I) of the arms are stretched and caused to catch with their noses d behind the rear wall of the keyhole. In this position the device is locked by means of a small padlock h, the hasp 2' of which is passed through the eyes in the front ends of the arms. The device thus forms an obstruction in the keyhole which will prevent the insertion into the latter of a key or other instrument for opening the lock and permit only the person who is in possession of the key to the padlock of removing the device from the keyhole and of opening the main look.
It is understood that the device may be modified in various ways without deviating from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
The combination with a lock, of a safety device consisting of arms pivoted together to be swung crosswise to one another and having at one end noses and at the other eyes said arms being adapted to be placed into the keyhole and engage with their noses the inner edges of the same and a padlock to engage said eyes and temporarily lock the arms in said keyhole.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
OTTO S. Gnorrnn, ELLIS V. LEVY.
