Description
N. RANCOUR BURGLARPROOF LOCK Filed May 10, 1922 flapol em Kan 0v? Patented Dec. 23, 1924.
ITED STAT NAPOLEON RANGOUR, OF HIG-FELJLND PARK ItEICI-IIGAN.
BURGLARFROOF LOCK.
Application filed May 10,
T all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ilAlOLEON Ransom. a citizen of the United States 01 iunerica residing at Highland Park, in the county of lvayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lnu-glarproof Locks, oi which the following is a specification reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to burglar-proot locking devices for use in connection with locks having a sliding bolt for the locking element.
in object of the invention is to provide a reliable and elticient device which will operate automatically to retain the bolt of the lock in extended or locked position.
Another object. is to provide a device which can be readily appiied to any door. window or the like and when applied will be in a position on the door or window which will preclude any possibility of an un authorized person withdrawing the bolt from its keeper to unlock the door or win dow.
.iinother object is to provide a strong and durable device which can be niai'iul acturod at a very low cost.
lYith the above and other objects in view. the invention consists of certain novei 'i'eatures 0t construction as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the locking device applied to a door;
Figure 2 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a detail view of the plunger:
Figure 4. is a detail view showing a slight ly modified form of construction;
Figure is a detail view of the plunger illustrated in Figure 4:.
Referring now to the drawings in which like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 1. designates a door having a recess formed in the outer edge thereof which receives a lock 2 having a sliding bolt 3 adapted to engage a keeper 4. The bolt 3 is actuated by suitable mechanism within the lock which is controlled by a key 5.
A. plunger 6, preferably of steel, extends through aligned openings 7 and 8 respectively in the door 1 and lock 2 and is normally n engagement With the adjacent side of the 1822. Serial No. 559,710.
bolt. The plunger is also adapted to engage a recess 9 formed in the bolt 3 intermediate the ends thereof when the bolt is in extended or locked position. The outer end of the plunger (3 is reduced to provide an annular shoulder 10 and is threaded as shown at 11.
A tint spring 12 of any suitable material is reinoval'ily secured to the door adjacent to the outer edge thereof and is provided with an opening 13 at its upper end which receives the threaded outer plunger. A. knurled nut 1% engages the threaded portion of said plunger to retain 't he upper end of said spring in engagement with the annular shoulder 10 whereby the plunger is normally urged inwardly under tension of the spring. A headed pin 15 passes through an opening 16 in the spring adjacent to the upper end thereof and is reiuovahly secured to the door to limit the outward movement of the spring.
in the modification illustrated in Figure l. a plunger 20 is threaded at its outer end as shown at 21. A flat spring 22 is remova y secured to the door adjacent the outer edge tl'iereot. and is provided with an opening in the upper end thereof which receives the threaded outer end of thc plungir. An interiorly threaded metallic washer 23 and a knurled nut 2i are adjustably mounted on the threaded outer end of the plunger upon opposite sides of the spring. lVith this construction, the tension of the spring can be regulated by adjusting the washer and nut on the threaded outer end of the plungerto vary the distance between the upper end of the spring and the door when the bolt is in retracted or unlocked position.
in use when the key is operated, the lock mechanism will move the bolt outwardly into engagement with the keeper to as siune a locked position whereupon the recess J in the bolt will re with the aligned openings 7 and 8 respectively. The plunger acting under the influence oi the spring will then move inwardly into engagement with the recess 9 thus retaining the bolt in locked position. lVhen it is desired to unlock the door, the knurled nut is pulled outwardly to disengage the plunger from the recess 9 in the bolt whereupon the key may be operated for withdrawing the bolt from its keeper. I
l Vhenever for any reason it is desired to render the plunger inoperative a curved wedgeshaped member is pivotally end of said mounted upon the door above the plunger. The lower free end of the wedge-shaped member is adapted to extend between the spring and door to retain the plunger in outermost position,
WVhile it is believed that from the fore going description the nature'and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to what is herein shown and described, and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. The combination with a lock having a sliding bolt, of a reciprocatory plunger, spring means for moving said plunger into engagement with said bolt to retain the same in locked position, and movable means engageable with said spring means for retaining said plunger out of engagement with said bolt.
2. The combination with a lock having a sliding bolt, of a reciprocatory plunger, spring means for moving said plunger into engagement with said bolt to retain the same in locked position, and a pivoted member engageable with said spring means for retaining said plunger out of engagement with said bolt.
3. The combination with a lock having a sliding bolt, of a plunger, spring means for moving said plunger inwardly into engagement with said bolt to retain the same in locked position, means for moving said plunger outwardly to disengage the same from said bolt to permit the latter to re.- turn to unlocked position, and means extending through said spring means for limiting the outward movement of said plunger.
4'. The combination with a lock having a sliding bolt, of a plunger, spring means for moving said plunge-r inwardly into engagement with said bolt to retain the same in locked position, means for moving said plunger outward to disengage the same from said bolt to permit the latter to return to un locked position, and a headed element extending through said spring means for limiting the outward movement of said plunger,
5; The combination with a lock having a sliding bolt, of a reciprocatory plunger engageab'le with said bolt to retain the same in locked position, a spring for moving said plunger into engagement with said bolt, and movable means for rendering said spring inoperative.
6. The combination with a lock having a sliding, bolt, of a member engageable with said bolt to retain the same in a pre-determined position, yiel'dable means for moving said member into engagement with said bolt, means for disengaging said member from said bolt, and means engageable with said yieldable means for rendering said member inoperative.
7. The combination with a lock having a sliding bolt, of a member e-ngageable with said bolt to retain the same in a predeter mined position, means for moving said member in one direction to engage said bolt, means for moving said member in another direction to disengage said member from said bolt and means engageable with one of the means aforesaid for rendering the same inoperative.
8. The combination with a lock having a movable bolt, of a member engageable with said bolt to retain the same in a pre-determined position, means for moving said member in one direction to engage said bolt, means for moving said member in another direction to disengage said member from said bolt, means engageable with one of the means aforesaid for limiting the movement of the member in one direction, and means also engageable with one of the means aforesaid for limiting the movement of the member in another direction.
9. The combination with a lock having a movable bolt, for a member engageable with said bolt. to retain the same in a predetermined position, a yieldable element for moving said member in one direction to engage said bolt, means connected to the member for moving the same in another direction to disengage said member from the bolt, a swingingly mounted member engageable with said yieldable element for limiting the movement of the member in one direction, and a headed element engageable with said yieldable element for limiting the movement of said member in another direction.
In testimony whereof I affix my signaiure.
NAPOLEON RANCOUR.
