Be it known that I, mprint MonnIsoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Troy, in the county of Ilenssclaer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Brush- Back, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.

This invention relates to a class of brushes, and has for its object primarily to provide a form of back whereby hair brushes, clothes brushes and the like may be produced in attractive fanciful designs including representations of expensive types of brushes having ornamentally embossed or curved backs of metal and other material, and which contemplates dispensing, according to present methods, with the use of plates of wood having bristles mounted thereon by woven wire, in order to avoid premature damage to the brushes by the wood tending to warp and separate from their backs when subjected to water. The invention consists essentially of a plate which may be stamped or molded from metal or other suitable material in a form to provide in one of its faces a recess, besides providing if desired on the other face of the plate attractive ornamentations. In the recess of the plate is a plastic filling of substantially a waterproof quality in which is embedded protruding bristles, and filling of this class is generally of excessive weight especially when used in the recess of ornamentally embossed plates of this kind which require the wall of the recess to be of unusual width. In order to lessen the weight of the brush by limiting the quantity of plastic filling as well as enabling the filling to be firmly held to the plate, in the recess of the plate is provided a retainer or filler which is light in weight and of a size for reducing the area of the recess. This reducing retainer is also of a size and shape to provide a groove between the wall of the recess and retainer to allow the plastic filling when applied in the recess to enter the groove and countersink the retainer in the filling, thereby serving to prevent tendency of the filling and bristles from accidentally separating from the plate.

A further object of the invention is to provide a brush back of a simple and efficient construction which may be made in varlous sizes and shapes.

invention will be hereinafter more particularlydescribed with reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and will then be pointed outin the claims at the end of the description.

The brush back has a plate 10 of metal or other suitable material which is stamped or molded in a form to provide in one of 1ts faces a recess 11, while the plate may be embossed or other fancifully designed, and this recessed plate may be of any desired size and shape to provide a hair brush, clothes brush orbrush for other purposes.

In the recess 11 of the plate 10 is provided substantially water proof filling or plate 13 of cemcntitious plastic material in which is embedded by any appropriate process protruding tufts of bristles, as 14, and in event of employing solely plastic material I have found that the brush would be impracticable for use, because of its excessive weight. The plastic filling 13 maybe 01': any well known or preferred formula, and in order to lessen the weight of the brush by reducing the area of the recess 11 whereby a limited quantity of the plastic filling may be used, in the recess is provided a filler or block, as 15. The filler 15 may be made of a plate of wood, cork or other material of a light weight, and the filler or plate 15 also serves as a retainer for holding the plastic material in the recess 10 against accidental separation by being made of smaller dimension than the recess as well as being of a thickness less than the depth of the recess. An annular groove 16 is thereby provided between the plate and the wall 12 of the recess 11 of the plate 10. The filler or retainer secured in the recess of"the plate 10 by anyv suitable means, such as spaced clips'19 each in the form of a strip which protrudes from the wall 12 of the recessed plate 10 so that all of the strips lap in close engagement upon the exposed face of the fiatretainer or filler 15. The plastic filling 13, after the bristles 14: are 'embedded therein, is by exercising sufficient pressure forced into the groove 16 between the retainer and the wall of the recess 11 as well as being forced for causingthe roughened exposed 'face 18 of the retainer to be engaged by the filling. The retainer or filler 15 will then be countersunken in the plastic filling which with the bristles will in turn be tightly held to the plate 10. Thus'I' provide a simplified form of back for brushes which maybe made in attractively ornamental designs to sell at moderate prices as well as being adapted to be made in types representing expensive forms of brushes.

In the foregoing description, I have embodied the preferred formof my invention, but I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, therefore I reserve to myself the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope thereof.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a brush back, a plate of comparatievly light weight material arranged in a recessed metallic plate, the plate being of a size whereby a groove is provided between its edge and the Wall of the recess of the back as well as being of considerably less thickness than the depth of the recess of the back and the exposed face of the plate being roughened and strips having one of their ends secured to spaced parts of the wall of the recess of the back and the second end parts being bent over in lapping arrangement upon the roughened face of said plate. 2. The combination, in a brush back, of a recessed metal plate, a plate of wood on the bottom of the recess of the metal plate and having ,a roughened exposed face, the wood plate being of a size so that an annular groove is provided between its edge and the wall of the recess of the metal plate and the wood plate also being of a thickness so that it is countersunken in the recess of the metal plate, and metal strips having one of their ends secured to spaced parts of'the wall of the recess of the metal plate and the second end parts being bent over in lapping arrangement upon the roughened face of the wood plate.
