SWITCH PLATE.

The-present invention is directed to improvements in switch plates more particularly used in connection with electric light fixtures.

The primary object of the invention is to provide as a new article of manufacture a metal switch plate so constructed that a sheet of wood veneer can be permanently attached hereto to enhance the appearance of the plate. Heretofore, switch plates of this nature have been made with the surface fully exposed,

consequently they become soiled and tarnished and offer an unsightly appearance after being in use a comparatively short time. Therefore, a further object of the invention is to provide a switch plate covered with wood veneer to such an extent that only a small margin of the plate will be exposed, thereby eliminating the objectionable features characteristic of an all metal switch plate.

Another and important object of the invention is to provide a switch plate so constructed that sheets of wood veneer of different kinds can be permanently secured thereto in order that the plate will blend or harmonize with the wood or other trim of the room or place the plates are used.

In the drawing Figure l is a plan view of the plate.

Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view.

Referring to the drawing 1 designates a metal switch plate of the conventional shape and in this instance a metal stamping, but it will be of course understood that the plate can be made in any approved manner. However, the late differs from the usual plate in that it is provided with a shallow recess 2, the purpose of which will appear later.

The base of the recess 2 is provided with openings 3 and 4, as customary, the former serving to accommodate the usual push button of the switch structure, while the latter receive the securing devices used for attaching the plate upon a wall or the like.

The recess serves to receive and retain the sheet of wood veneer 5 which is retained permanently in said recess by suitable cement. Before the sheet 5 is placed in the recess it is cut in any suitable manner so as to fit the no recess with its ed es in intimate contact with the walls 6 defining the recess, it bein understood that o enings 7 and 8 are cut t erein to accomm ate the

The sheet of veneer, after being secured in the recess 2 can be polished and waxed or treated in any suitable manner to give the wood a pleasing finish.

Since wood veneer of different kinds and colors can be used it will be obvious that should the wood trim of a room be in walnut, walnut veneer will be used upon the plates, whereby the plates will blend with the trim of the room. In this manner the lates can be furnished to blend with the trim of the room regardless of the color and kind of wood trim used. The fact that the margin of the plate is not concealed will by its contrast with the veneer offer a plate which is extremely pleasing to the eye in its entirety.

What is claime is As a new article of manufacture a face plate formed of metal vand having a recess formed in the face thereof leaving a raised border and raised flanges surrounding the openings for the attaching means an the projecting portions of the apparatus to be covered, an a sheet of wood veneer secured in and filling said recess substantially flush with said flanges.
