FILING om: 0R LoosEULEAF Filed Jan. 19, 1954 F/GJ.
Patented May s, 1936 2,039,752 FILING CARD OR. LOOSE LEAF Frederick Thomas, Philadelphia, Pa., assgnor to Keystone Index Card Company,
Philadelphia,
Pa., a corporation of Delaware Application January 19, 1934, Serial No. 707,253
1 Claim.
' The principal object of the present invention is to strengthen the marginal portion of an index or filing card or, loose leaf, and more particularly that portion of the margin which bounds the perforations provided for binding or holdingl such leaves or cards. f
Another object of the invention is to accomplish the above result without marring, or detracting from, the appearanceof the card or leaf, and 10 Without obscuring any printed data that may appear upon the same.
Other objects of the invention will appear from the following description at the end of which the invention will be claimed.
Generally stated, the invention consists in a surface coating or varnish applied to one edge of a loose leaf or index card and the bounding walls of the perforations therein and to the border portion of each face of the card inward from said 20 edge.
The invention also consists in the improvements to be presently described and finally claimed.
In the following description reference will be made to the accompanying drawing forming part 25 hereof and in which,
Figure 1 is a face view of an index card embodying features of the invention.
Figure 2 is a similar view of a loose leaf embodying features of the invention, and
Figure 3 is a diagrammatic cross sectional view of the marginal part of a leaf or card embodying features of the invention.
Referring to Figure 1, 3 represents a. filing card generally rectangular in outline and having a row 35 of perforations 4 spaced inward from its edge 5. 6 represents a surface coating of transparent varnish applied to the edge and to the bounding walls 1 of the perforations 4 and to the border portion 8 of each face of the card inside of the edge 5.
The surface coating of varnish may be applied by dipping the card edgewise to a suitable depth in a fluid bath of varnish which thereafter sets or dries on the card.
One example of a s table transparent varnish is as follows:
Grams 5 Cellulose acetate (dry) Acetone (fluid) 30 Dimethylphthalate (fluid) 1 This col1oida1 'solution may be mixed cold .or heated to about 130 F. 1 The superficial coating of varnish protects the card from tearing by strengthening its marginal portion and adjacent edges as well as the wall which denes or bounds the perfor ations. 15
l The construction and operation 'if the modication shown in Figure 2 are as above described, except as follows, 9 indicates a loose leaf and the perforations I0 do not extend through to the edge of the leaf.
In this description and in the appended claim the word varnis is used comprehensively and includes lacquer, a plating of cellulose compound, natural or synthetic resin, latex, or Bakeliteh It will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which the invention relatesthat modificationsmay be made in details of construction and arrangement and in matters of mere form without departing from the spirit of the invention which is not limited in respect to such matters or otherwise than as the prior art, and the appended claim may require.
I claim:
A filing card or loose leaf, rectangular in outline and having perforations spaced inward from one of its edges and provided through its body, and having a coating of varnish applied to said edge and to the bounding walls of the perforations and to the border portion of each face inside said edge and confined to the surface, leaving the underlying portion of the card or loose leaf in its original flexible condition.
