This invention relates to advertising display devices and it refers to devices of the kind in which there is employed a representation of an article, said representation being in the form of a hollow body, such for example as would be secured by cutting a bottle longitudinally into two parts, one of the bodies so produced being applied to .a card or other support.

The body is composed of transparent flexible material and is provided around the back or open side with a peripheral flange disposed in the plane of the back of the body. In order to secure the body to the card or other support said support is provided with a perforation of an outline closely following that of the back of the body, said body being passed through said opening from the back of the support until the aforesaid marginal flange contacts with the surface of the support around the opening therein. The representation is held in place by applying to the back of the support, of a piece of cardboard of the same, or substantially the same size as the size of the support, said card being secured by adhesive and covering both the opening in the support and in the back of the representation and the flange upon said representation.

The present invention has for its object certain improvements designed not only to reduce the cost of such devices, but to enable a much more effective and realistic representation of the article to be produced.

With the foregoing objects in view, instead of perforating the cardin the manner before described the said card is left imperforate, and the representation of the article, which, as in the former case, is composed of thin flexible transparent material, Celluloid for example, is provided at various points with lugs which are passed through perforations in the card and then turned backwards so that they may lie against the back of the card to which they are secured in any suitable manner as for example by cover ing them with pieces or strips of adhesive coated paper or other material. By leaving the card imperfo-rate beneath the representation there is provided a surface which may be decorated or coloured in any suitable manner, preferably such as will indicate or represent the material or goods supposed to be contained in the bottle or other receptacle and if desired this part of the card may be embossed whereby not only will the realistic appearance of the article be increased, but in the event of the flexible material of which the article is composed being subjected to pressure, it cannot be deflected inwards to such an extent as will cause it to be injured or prevent its returning to its original form when the pressure is removed.

Preferably a picture of the article is printed. or otherwise produced upon the imperforate part of the card covered by the representation and both the picture and the representation itself show the article as it would appear as seen in perspective.

The imperforate portion of the card behind the representation may be treated with cellulose or other glossy or transparent varnish or a thin sheet of transparent glossy material may be ap-- plied thereto.

In order that the invention may be more readily understood reference is made to the accompanying drawing in which:-

Referring to the accompanying drawing I indicates the support or background which may bear suitable advertising or other matter. 2 indicates the representation of an article in the present instance a glass jar containing marmalade. The representation is formed of thin transparent Celluloid and has the appearance of a jar as seen in perspective.

Provided at suitable points upon the margin of the jar are lugs 3 which may conveniently be formed integral with the part 2 or separate therefrom and attached thereto in any suitable manner. That part of the support I, which will be covered by the representation has printed or otherwise produced upon it, as shown in Fig. 6, a picture of a jar filled with marmalade as seen in perspective, and in order to enhance the effect the picture is treated with a glossy transparent varnish. As shown in Fig. 4 the part just referred to lies in the same plane as that of the rest of the body I, but if desired this part may be raised or embossed as shown in Fig. 5 so that the outer surface is more or less closely spaced to the inside of the representation. By this means not only is the realistic effect improved but in the event of pressure being applied to the front of the representation it cannot be depressed sufliciently to cause damage thereto.

The attachment of the representation to the support I is effected by means of the aforesaid lugs 3 for the passage of which suitably disposed slits or openings 4, Figs. 4, 5 and 6, are formed in the part I. The lugs if necessary are first softened by the application of heat to permit them to be readily bent so as to pass through the slits or openings and then turned backward so as to lie against the inner surface of the part i. The attachment is completed by the application of strips of adhesive coated paper indicated by 6 in Figs. 2, 4 and 5, of the drawing. Instead of turning them so that they point outwards as shown, they may be so turned that they point inwardly.

The outer surface of the representation may be highly polished or either the outer and the inner surface of the said representation may be provided with a so called matt or other surface and if desired either the outer or the inner surfaces may be wholly or partly coloured or otherwise treated to increase the realistic appearance of said representation.

I claim:

1. An advertising display device comprising a hollow body in the form of an article as seen in perspective, formed of thin flexible material, marginal lugs upon said body extending from the short sides thereof, a support for said body, a slot for each lug in said support through which said lug may be passed and its end bent to prevent its withdrawal from the slot, and means for securing said bent part of said lug to said support.

An advertising display device comprising a hollow body in the form of an article as seen in perspective, formed of thin flexible transparent material, marginal lugs upon said body extending from the short sides thereof, a support for said body, an illustration of the article as seen in perspective upon said support and adapted to be covered by said body, a slot for each lug in said support through which said lug may be passed and its end bent to prevent its withdrawal from the slot, and means for securing said bent part of said lug to said support.

An advertising display device comprising a hollow body in the form of an article as seen in perspective, formed of thin flexible transparent material, marginal lugs upon said body adjacent the corners thereof, a support for said body, an illustration of the article as seen in perspective upon said support and adapted to be covered by said body, the part bearing such illustration being embossed, a slot for each lug in said support through which said lug may be passed and its end bent to prevent its Withdrawal from the slot, and means for securing said bent part of said lug to said support.

An advertising display device comprising a hollow body composed of flexible transparent material having the shape of an article as seen in perspective, marginal lugs upon said body adjacent the corners thereof, a support for said body, a plurality of slots in said support each adapted to engage one of the lugs upon said body, a raised surface upon said support, an illustration of the device represented by the hollow body upon said raised surface, said illustration being at least in part covered by said body, and means for securing the lugs to the back of the support after they have been turned back against the back of said support. An advertising display device comprising a hollow body formed of thin flexible material, said body forming a complete article and having flanged portions thereon, marginal lugs upon said flanged portions, a support for said body, a slot for each lug in said support through which said lug may be passed and its end bent to prevent its withdrawal from the slot and means for securing said bent part of said lug to said support.
