IMPROVEMENT IN SUSPENDER-B ELTS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,282, dated June 6, 1876; application filed July 7, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWIN J. FRASER, of San Francisco city and county, State of California, have invented an Improved Suspender- Belt for Females; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertaius to make and use my said invention or improvement without further lnvention or experiment.

My invention relates to an improved hip belt or band for supporting stocking-suspenders and other appendages from the waists of females; and .my object is to so construct the belt or band that it will conform to the shape of that portion of the body upon which it is supported, so that the strain or pull upon it will be received upon and over the hips, 1nstcad of dragging upon the waist in the manner of the ordinary waistband.

My improved support I therefore call a conformation hip-band.

In order to more fully illustrate and explain my invention, reference is bad to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of my device. Fig. 2 shows my improved device applied.

The hip-band support consists of a seamless band, A, which is cut in a circular or segmental form or shape without any distinctive belt, so that when it is applied to the waist it .conforms precisely to the shape of the hips,

without wrinkle or seam, where the pressure comes upon the hips, thereby making a smooth, easy-fitting, and perfectly comfortable article of Wearing apparel. The upper edge of the band describes about a quarter of a circle, or ninety degrees, more or less, while the lower edge is out either with broad triangular projections b b, extending downward, or of a suffici-ent depth on a line with the upper edge to cover the hip, thereby forming a broad even support. At the lower extremities of the tria suspension-strap, d, provided with clips 0.

The belt being cut in a circular or segmental form, as described, the article is bias or diagonal with the direction of the threads forming the fabric, thereby giving it greater elasticity and a more ready adaptability to the form of the body. I

All other devices for this purpose of which I have any knowledge consist of a straight belt, which is made also on a line with the threads of the fabric, to which are attached triangular tabs, or else straps for the attachment of the suspenders. The straight belt does not conform to the shape of the body, and the seams where the tabs or straps are united to it chafe and irritate the body. C011- stant traction upon the suspender pulls the lower edge of the straight belt, together with the seam, down upon the hips, while the pressure of the clothing, which covers it,presses'it still more harshly against the body, thereby causing a feeling of uneasiness and discomfort, while on my hand no broad waist-belt is used, but simply a band which pulls directly upon the hips.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I As a new article of manufacture, a seamless supporter, A, for stocking-suspenders, cut bias in a circular or segmental form, and provided with thebroad tabs b b, to conform to the shape of the body and hips below the waist, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
