UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARION CODDINGTON, OF'RAHWAY, NEW JERSEY.
WAiST, DRAWERS, AND STOCKING SUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 288,020, dated November 6, 1883.
" Application filed July 28,1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, hIARION CODDING'TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bahway, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Waist, Drawers, and Stocking Supporters Combined; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it apperta'ins to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a more simple, durable, comfortable, readily adjustable, and otherwise an efficient support or. brace for childrens stockings and lower garments; and it consists in the arrangements and combinations of parts, substantially as will be hereinafter set forth, and finally embodied in the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts in each of the several figures, Figure 1 represents my improved device as arranged upon the wearer. Fig. 2- is a view of the device detached from said wearer, and Fig. 3 shows a blank supporting strap or piece as cut from appropriate material, preferably jean.
In carrying out my invention I out the said supporting-pieces a a fronrsuitable fabric 7 such as jean-in the formshown in Fig. 3, a
being arms, tongues, or straps of a shoulderpiece, which unite at a, and from thence pass upward and terminate in cross-cut edges 60', which edges, when properly lapped, are sewed together, co-form a seam, an arm or shoulder aperture, 2), being formed, and the fabric being thus adapted to lie smoothly on the hip, the front and back, and the shoulder of the child. By this construction but one seam is formed in'thesupporting-piece, excepting such others as may be formed by making the said piece of more than one thickness of material. The tongues a a, where they are integrally joined at the bottom, form the broadened hip piece a, which lies over the hip and cause; the pressure thereupon to be evenly distrib uted over the large space covered by the sail broadened portion a, and prevents all cutting and pain, which are frequently occasioned lo; narrow bands or straps.
Upon the hip portions a, which are intc gral with the tongues or straps a, are arrange buttons 0, or other suitable devices, to hol the waistband of the pants, drawers, or othe lower garments. Depending from said hi portions are secured straps d, adapted to or gage with the stocking, to hold the same. Th said straps may be duplicated or doubled, t engage with the stocking on opposite sides c the leg. The lower extremities of the stra are provided with suitable means to engag with the stocking, such as the button 6. i
The supporting-pieces are connected b; bands f, which pass across the front and bad. of the wearer and hold said supporting-piece in proper position upon the body, the iron band being permanently secured at one end but detachableat the other, to enable the de vice to be removed. Said front band is prc vided with a button, or other attaching dr vice.
The back-band is preferably secured perm: nently at both its extremities; but it may als be made detachable.
What I claim as new is The herein-described supporting device fc body-wear, consisting of the straps a a, mad of a single piece of material having a broa ,ened portion, a, at the bottom thereof, an provided with connecting-bands f and strap d, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing have hereunto set my hand this 16th day July, 1883.
MARION oonnmcron.
