IMPROVEMENT IN SLAT'ES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 17S, [82, dated May 30, 1876; application led April 7,- 1876.

Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. MONT- GOMERY, of the cit-y and county of St. Louis and State of Missour,have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in School- Slates, of which the following is a full, clear, and exa-et description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making part of this specification. i i
My invention relates to those slates which are provided with hinged covers.
My improvement consists, first, in combining With an ordinary slate, having a reversible cover, a fasteningada-pted to lock said cover upon either side ofthe slate. My improvement consists, secondly, in a peculiar construction ot hinge adapted to turnWith the cover, and consisting of apivoted ear having projections which engage with a guidepin and a pivot.

A is the slate, and B is the cover. C is a pivoted ear, of which there is one upon each of the two sides of the slate, and to which the cover B is connected by pivot-pins b, projecting from the edges of the cover at the corners. The ears O have projections c c, which are en` gaged by the pin b as the cover is reversed,
so as to carry around the ears with the cover, and prevent the cover jamming against the end a of the slate. D D are bosses of rubber upon both sides of the reversible cover.
. These rubbers or bosses perform two offices first, they prevent the noisy contact ofthe slate with the desk; and, secondly, prevent the rattling of the cover against the slatefraine, and by their elasticity act, in combination with the hook-fastening F, to hold the cover iirmly in place.
The hook F is pivoted vto the end har of the slate, and is capable of being swung around, so as to engage the eye or pin f, when the cover is over either face ot' the slate.
The purpose of the cover is to prevent the accidental erasure of marks from the slate.
I claiml. The combination, with the slate having i reversible cover, B, ot' the fastening F, adapted to lock said cover upon either side of the slate, as and for the purpose set forth.
i 2. The hinge, consisting ot' pivoted ear C, having projections c o, pivot b, and guide-pin b', as and for the purpose set forth.
